How owners in Bordeaux get a paw print

On All Saints' Day, the first of November, French families traditionally carry chrysanthemums to relatives' graves, and some in Bordeaux now remember a pet on the same day with a candle beside the urn or flowers by a garden stone. If you want a paw print or a lock of fur for that memorial, ask before the cremation takes place.

The quays along the Garonne, the Jardin Public, the Arcachon Basin and the Dune du Pilat are places many Bordeaux families shared with their animals. Beaches, forests and public gardens each have rules about ashes, so check with the local mairie first. Keeping most of the ashes at home and taking a pinch to the coast is a common compromise.

A clinic print is often a round clay disc with your pet's name stamped in, taken quickly while the team is with you. It's a lovely keepsake, but engravers and jewelers usually need a flat, high-contrast image. If you think you might want jewelry or an engraved urn later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well. It takes a minute more and saves regret.

With roughly 249,000 residents, Bordeaux is one of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine communities we cover.

A pet at home in Bordeaux

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Burial is still more common than cremation for people in France, where about 44.91%[1] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.

We take the France rate from ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Bordeaux, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Getting a clean print in Bordeaux in any season

Whatever the season in Bordeaux, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Bordeaux

What paw print keepsakes cost in Bordeaux

Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[4] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[5]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Bordeaux, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

The full price table by product is on our Nouvelle-Aquitaine page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules in Nouvelle-Aquitaine that touch on keepsakes

Rules in Nouvelle-Aquitaine mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

In France, a crématorium animalier can often take an empreinte de patte before cremation, and some vets keep clay kits at the clinic. Ask when you arrange collection, and ask whether the print comes back with the ashes or separately. In the hot south, dry air-dry clay slowly indoors to stop the toes cracking.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
  2. Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
  3. Decide whether to bring your pet home instead of arranging cremation locally; the print goes with you either way.
  4. Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
  5. If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
  6. Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.

Remembering your pet through their print

An échoppe garden in Bordeaux has room for a small memorial stone or a potted olive or fig planted with ashes, while in a center apartment a compact urn or pendant usually fits better. Some families choose an urn in local oak, a nod to the wine barrels made in the region. Knowing where it will sit makes the choice of style much easier.

Questions people ask

How do France attitudes to cremation compare?

ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) puts the France human cremation rate at about 44.91%[1]. We show it on the Bordeaux page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.

Can I get my dog's nose print?

Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.

Can I get a hoof print from my horse?

Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.

How do I get a nose print from my cat?

Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.

Is ink safe on my pet's paw?

Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
