Paw Print Keepsakes in Nouvelle-Aquitaine: what to know

If you're in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

Paw prints in Nouvelle-Aquitaine aren't only for dogs and cats. Horse owners keep hoof prints pressed into clay slabs, bird owners capture tiny feet in soft clay, and rabbit owners find that clay shows the long, furry shape of the hind foot better than ink. Each needs a slightly different approach, and each city page covers the basics.

Cremation habits in Nouvelle-Aquitaine and the print window

About 44.91%[1] of people in Nouvelle-Aquitaine are cremated, lower than in many places, and pet crematories can be fewer and further between. If your pet will be cremated some distance away, the print is best taken locally, by you or your vet, before the journey. Crematories often offer one at intake, but you can't check it if you're not there.

ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) publishes the Nouvelle-Aquitaine rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Paw print costs around Nouvelle-Aquitaine, line by line

European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[2]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Nouvelle-Aquitaine what's included before you choose.

We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[3]. In Nouvelle-Aquitaine, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.

What the law in Nouvelle-Aquitaine does and doesn't cover

If you might move away from Nouvelle-Aquitaine one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Nouvelle-Aquitaine allows, set out below.

In France, a crématorium animalier can often take an empreinte de patte before cremation, and some vets keep clay kits at the clinic. Ask when you arrange collection, and ask whether the print comes back with the ashes or separately. In the hot south, dry air-dry clay slowly indoors to stop the toes cracking.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
  2. Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
  3. Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
  4. Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
  5. Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
  6. Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.

Keeping the print and the memory close

A scan of the print can become a small rubber stamp, the kind a stationery or print shop makes from any clean black-and-white image. Some families use it on birthday cards, the inside cover of a photo album or the corner of a letter to a friend who knew the pet. It's an everyday way to keep their paw in circulation, and it costs far less than jewelry.

Questions people ask

Is it better to use a local maker in Nouvelle-Aquitaine or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

How many communities do you cover in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 1 communities in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, including Bordeaux. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

What do other owners in Nouvelle-Aquitaine choose for a paw print keepsake?

We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
