Paw print keepsakes in Regensburg: timing, methods and costs

Regensburg, Bavaria

Arranging a paw print around Regensburg

Many Regensburg homes are apartments with little outdoor space, so indoor memorials are a common choice: a small urn on a shelf, a paw print impression or a piece of cremation jewellery. Families with a house and garden in the suburbs or surrounding villages often prefer something outside, such as an engraved stone or a plant. Think about whether you're likely to move before choosing something heavy or fixed.

German families often take their time over memorials, and there's no reason to hurry. Ashes can stay in a simple container at home until you've decided whether you want a single urn, small keepsakes to share with relatives, or a stone for the garden. Pet cemeteries exist in Germany too, so ask what's available near Regensburg if you'd like a permanent place to visit.

A clinic print is often a round clay disc with your pet's name stamped in, taken quickly while the team is with you. It's a lovely keepsake, but engravers and jewelers usually need a flat, high-contrast image. If you think you might want jewelry or an engraved urn later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well. It takes a minute more and saves regret.

With roughly 153,000 residents, Regensburg is the 4th-largest of the 5 Bavaria communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Regensburg are based about 55 miles away in Nuremberg, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

For a second opinion on price, Nuremberg (55 miles, a larger centre), Munich (65 miles, a larger centre) and Augsburg (71 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Regensburg routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

76.0%[1]

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

~$32[2]

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Germany and the print window

With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.

The Germany percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Regensburg, not as a count of pets.

Heat, humidity, cold and drying times

Whatever the season in Regensburg, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Regensburg

European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Regensburg what's included before you choose.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Bavaria: Bavaria costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules in Bavaria that touch on keepsakes

There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Bavaria does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.

In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, use very soft clay or inkless paper and the lightest pressure. Tiny toes show best in clay.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, and photograph it so a maker can work from the image.

Keeping the print and the memory close

The Danube, the Regen and the wooded hills around Regensburg give many people a sense of where they'd like a pet remembered. A biodegradable urn buried with a tree in your own garden suits the Bavarian climate, and hardy native trees do well here. Before scattering ashes anywhere public, such as by the river or in woodland, check the local rules and choose a quiet spot and a still day.

If you live between Regensburg and Nuremberg, Augsburg, Munich and Starnberg, either page applies. Every other community in Bavaria, and all of Germany, is listed too.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Nuremberg to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Nuremberg (roughly 55 miles from Regensburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Regensburg follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Regensburg?

Usually yes. Nuremberg is about 55 miles away, Munich is about 65 miles away and Augsburg is about 71 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I get a hoof print from my horse?

Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.

What should I ask for if I don't know the local word for a paw print?

Say paw print, and show a photo if you can; most vets and crematoria in Germany will understand. It can help to know the local term: Pfotenabdruck in German, empreinte de patte in French, pootafdruk in Dutch, impronta della zampa in Italian. Ask whether they take a clay impression, an ink print or both, and whether it's included in the price.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Regensburg?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[5]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
