A paw print to keep, in Nuremberg

Nuremberg, Bavaria

Who takes paw prints in Nuremberg

German families have a range of memorial choices for pets: burial in a pet cemetery, a garden grave where local rules permit, keeping ashes at home, or sealing a small amount in a keepsake. Some split the ashes between an urn at home and a place in a cemetery. If you want to scatter in nature, for example in Franconian Switzerland, ask about local rules first.

Nuremberg's red sandstone, visible in its churches and castle, gives the city a long sense of permanence, and many residents want a memorial that feels just as lasting. A small stone in the garden, a ceramic or wooden urn at home, or a pendant holding a little ash are all common. Some families keep a paw print impression on a shelf beside a favourite photo.

One advantage of a large metro like Nuremberg is the number of people who can turn a print into something else: ceramic studios, jewelers, engravers, embroiderers and tattoo artists. Working locally means you can see samples, hand over the print in person and collect the finished piece without shipping anything precious. Many online makers work from a photo or scan instead, so either way the original can stay safely at home.

With roughly 518,000 residents, Nuremberg is the 2nd-largest of the 5 Bavaria communities we cover.

Nuremberg sits within easy reach of Regensburg (55 miles), Augsburg (75 miles) and Munich (94 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Nuremberg; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

76.0%[1]

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

~$32[2]

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

A pet at home in Nuremberg

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Cremation accounts for about 76.0%[1] of human deaths in Germany, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.

That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Nuremberg only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Clay, ink and the local climate

In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

What owners in Nuremberg typically pay for a print

We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Nuremberg the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Bavaria: Bavaria costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Bavaria allows after your pet dies

Some towns and councils in Bavaria run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
  2. Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
  3. Decide whether to bring your pet home instead of arranging cremation locally; the print goes with you either way.
  4. Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
  5. If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
  6. Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Freezing winters around Nuremberg can crack cheap stone and make painted markers peel within a season or two. Granite, slate and glazed stoneware last longer outdoors. A planted memorial, such as a shrub or small tree, does well in the region's climate if planted in spring. For people who rent, a portable urn or keepsake can move house with them.

Questions people ask

Why does the Nuremberg page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Nuremberg?

Usually yes. Regensburg is about 55 miles away, Augsburg is about 75 miles away and Munich is about 94 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?

Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.

How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?

Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
