How owners in Cologne get a paw print
Space in a Cologne flat is limited, so many owners choose a small urn for a shelf or windowsill, or a memorial stone for a balcony planter. Paw prints in clay, a lock of fur in a locket, and photo frames with the pet's tag are popular. Ask for prints or clippings at the first contact, since these must be taken before the body leaves your home.
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many people think first of the Rhine. The river is busy with barges and ferries, and the banks are crowded on fine days, so a quiet moment on a weekday morning is gentler. A bio urn planted in a relative's garden, or a keepsake that holds a small portion, are alternatives that stay with you.
Apartment and condo living in Cologne adds a practical wrinkle. Collection teams may need a freight elevator, a loading bay or a parking permit, and building staff often ask for a set arrival time. That fixes the moment your pet leaves, so treat the print as something to finish before that slot. Book collection for an hour after the vet's visit rather than straight after, and you'll have room for a clay print and an ink copy without watching the clock.
About 1,086,000 people live in Cologne, which makes it the largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Bonn (15 miles), Dusseldorf (22 miles) and Essen (36 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Cologne routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Because Germany cremates about 76.0%[1] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.
That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Cologne only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons in Cologne and a print that lasts
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Cologne
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Cologne the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

What the law in North Rhine-Westphalia does and doesn't cover
Some towns and councils in North Rhine-Westphalia run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Skip the table. Bring the clay or card to wherever your pet likes to lie, on the floor or on their own bed.
- Recruit a second person to stroke and reassure your pet while you work on the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats to keep your pet's attention forward and their head still.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
- Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
- Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Cologne is a Catholic city with deep traditions around death, from candles lit in churches to cemetery visits in November, and some families carry those habits into how they remember a pet. A candle beside the urn on an anniversary, or flowers by a memorial stone, fits naturally. If you prefer something more permanent, pet cemeteries exist in the region and let you visit a grave.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Cologne?
The closest communities we cover are Bonn (about 15 miles), Dusseldorf (about 22 miles) and Essen (about 36 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Cologne too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Germany attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Germany human cremation rate at about 76.0%[1]. We show it on the Cologne page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How long before the print and ashes come back in Cologne?
By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[6], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Cologne which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
My pet died at night in Cologne. Is it too late for a print?
No. If your pet is at home, keep them cool on a towel and take the print yourself when you feel ready, within the first few hours if you can. If your pet is at an emergency hospital, ask the staff to take one, or tell the crematory in the morning that you want a print before cremation. You don't have to decide anything else that night.
Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?
Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Cologne.
