Getting your pet's paw print in Essen

Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia

Getting a paw print in Essen: the local picture

Many households in Essen's greener south have a garden, and allotments are common across the city, so a memorial often ends up outdoors: a planted shrub, a tree urn or a small engraved stone beneath a hedge. Allotment associations have their own rules, so ask before placing anything there. In a flat in the north, a compact urn or a keepsake on the windowsill does the same job.

Pet cemeteries around the Ruhr offer graves and urn plots for families who want somewhere to visit, much as they would for a relative. Others would rather keep ashes at home, divide them among family in small keepsakes, or scatter a little by the Ruhr where that is permitted. If you are considering a plot, ask how long it is held and what yearly fees apply.

Big-city apartments make home prints easier than people expect. You don't need a garden or a workshop, just a clear kitchen table, a towel, the clay or card taped flat and good light from a window. If your pet is a senior, pick a quiet evening after a meal or a walk, when they're drowsy and happy to lie still. A living pet who is relaxed gives a far crisper print than a rushed one taken in the last hours.

Essen's population is around 583,000, the 4th-largest of the 6 North Rhine-Westphalia communities we cover.

Our pages for Dusseldorf (19 miles), Dortmund (20 miles) and Cologne (36 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Essen as well.

76.0%[1]

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

~$32[2]

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

A pet at home in Essen

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

When roughly 76.0%[1] of human funerals in Germany end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.

The Germany percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Essen, not as a count of pets.

Clay, ink and the local climate

Whatever the season in Essen, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Essen

In Essen, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[4], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[5].

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for North Rhine-Westphalia: North Rhine-Westphalia costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What North Rhine-Westphalia allows after your pet dies

Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for North Rhine-Westphalia, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.

How to make sure a print is taken in time

  1. Choose one calm afternoon to print every pet in the house, starting with the most relaxed animal.
  2. Label everything before you start: a name on the back of each card, or a letter scratched into the underside of each clay disc.
  3. Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal then wipe each paw clean the moment you're done, so nobody licks ink off a housemate.
  4. Keep each turn short, a couple of minutes per pet, with a treat after every press.
  5. Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
  6. Store the set together and date each one on the reverse, so that years from now none of them has gone astray.

Ways families in Essen keep a print close

Zollverein, the former colliery that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, is Essen's great symbol, and some families here like memorials with the same solid, unfussy feel: a plain stone, a steel plaque, a simple wooden box. Others want something more delicate, such as a pendant with a trace of ash, a glass heart or a framed paw print. Both approaches are equally respectful.

Every option Essen families choose between is on the services page, browse in-depth guides or recent articles, try the free planning tools, or see what other families chose in the poll results. Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Essen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Essen?

Usually yes. Dusseldorf is about 19 miles away, Dortmund is about 20 miles away and Cologne is about 36 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?

Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.

My pet died at night in Essen. Is it too late for a print?

No. If your pet is at home, keep them cool on a towel and take the print yourself when you feel ready, within the first few hours if you can. If your pet is at an emergency hospital, ask the staff to take one, or tell the crematory in the morning that you want a print before cremation. You don't have to decide anything else that night.

What should I ask for if I don't know the local word for a paw print?

Say paw print, and show a photo if you can; most vets and crematoria in Germany will understand. It can help to know the local term: Pfotenabdruck in German, empreinte de patte in French, pootafdruk in Dutch, impronta della zampa in Italian. Ask whether they take a clay impression, an ink print or both, and whether it's included in the price.

Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?

It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
