A paw print to keep, in Jakarta

Jakarta, Indonesia

How owners in Jakarta get a paw print

Memorials for pets in Jakarta reflect the city's many faiths and traditions. Some families prefer to bury a pet in a garden and mark the spot with a stone or plant; others keep ashes in a small container at home, or choose a keepsake with a little ash. Whatever feels respectful to your family is right. A paw print made before burial or cremation is a gentle keepsake either way.

Many Jakarta families have roots in other parts of Indonesia, and some want a pet's remains to go back to a hometown garden or be shared among relatives. If that's likely, ask whether ashes can be divided, or whether a keepsake can be made for each person. A memorial doesn't have to be permanent to matter; a planted flower or a photo can hold the memory just as well.

Big-city apartments make home prints easier than people expect. You don't need a garden or a workshop, just a clear kitchen table, a towel, the clay or card taped flat and good light from a window. If your pet is a senior, pick a quiet evening after a meal or a walk, when they're drowsy and happy to lie still. A living pet who is relaxed gives a far crisper print than a rushed one taken in the last hours.

With roughly 10,560,000 residents, Jakarta is one of the Indonesia communities we cover.

A pet at home in Jakarta

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Indonesia

We don't have a reliable figure for how many people are cremated in Indonesia, but pet cremation is available in most places and home burial is common in many. Either way, a paw print has to be taken before anything else happens. Ask your vet or crematory whether they offer one, or take it yourself at home.

Getting a clean print in Jakarta in any season

Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Jakarta, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

In some Asian cities, the public route leaves nothing behind. Hong Kong's government, for instance, advises owners that a bagged animal can go to a refuse collection point, from where it goes to landfill[3]. Any keepsake, including a print, then depends on you or a private provider. If cost is the worry in Jakarta, a home print costs very little and can be taken before you decide anything else.

Burial, scattering and prints in Indonesia

Burial rules in many places, including Indonesia, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Take a breath. If your pet has just died at home, there is usually time for a print in the first few hours. Lay them on a towel in a cool room.
  2. Gather what you need: a damp cloth, and either clay you've softened between your palms or a sheet of card fixed to a board alongside a pet-safe ink pad.
  3. If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Ease it onto the pads with light pressure; don't try to push the foot down.
  4. Take a nose print too if you'd like one, with a light touch of ink or an inkless wipe.
  5. Call your vet or crematory once you're done, and mention that you've already taken a print so they don't need to.
  6. Let the print dry indoors, away from heaters and sunny windows, before you frame or post it anywhere.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Space is tight in Jakarta apartments, so a memorial often needs to be small: a photo and a little container on a shelf, a piece of jewelry, a framed paw print. Families in houses with gardens might plant a tree or bury a biodegradable urn. If you plan to scatter ashes by the sea or in the hills toward Bogor, check with the landowner or local rules first.

Questions people ask

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Jakarta?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[5]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.

Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?

It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.

Is ink safe on my pet's paw?

Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.

Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?

Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Jakarta.

Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?

Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.

How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?

Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
