Paw print keepsakes in Milan: where to start
Lake Como, Lake Maggiore and the Alps are within reach of Milan, and some families feel drawn to scatter ashes somewhere with a view of the water or the mountains. Rules vary by place, so check first, and consider keeping a small portion at home in an urn or keepsake in case you change your mind. A balcony planter with a flowering shrub can also be a quiet memorial in the city.
On 2 November, the Day of the Dead, many Italian families visit cemeteries and light candles for relatives, and some quietly include a pet in that remembrance. A candle beside a photo, flowers in a small vase or a visit to a pet cemetery on the outskirts are simple ways to mark it. Whatever form your memorial takes, it can be part of that yearly ritual.
Many households in Milan rent, move often or have more than one pet. Prints travel well: a sealed clay disc or a framed ink print moves with you, while a garden burial can't. If you have two or three animals, consider taking all their prints on the same afternoon, while everyone is well. It turns a sad job into an ordinary family project and means nobody is left out later.
With roughly 1,371,000 residents, Milan is the largest of the 2 Lombardy communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Como (24 miles), Genoa (74 miles) and Turin (78 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
38.16%[1]
In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
In Italy, only about 38.16%[1] of people are cremated, and many families still prefer a grave. A paw print can become part of that grave: pressed into a concrete stepping stone, cast in resin and set into a headstone, or kept at home while your pet rests in the garden. Take the print before burial, while the paw is still easy to position.

When the weather works against clay and ink
Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Milan, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[4] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[5]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Milan, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

Rules in Lombardy that touch on keepsakes
If you might move away from Lombardy one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Lombardy allows, set out below.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
- Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up. Take several prints and keep the clearest.
- Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Milan's design culture shows in how some families choose a memorial: a sleek ceramic or glass urn, an engraved stone, a piece of jewellery holding a trace of ash, or a simple framed print of a paw. In a city flat, shelf space and light matter, so picture the spot before you order. Ask the provider what they offer before the cremation, so any portions for keepsakes can be set aside.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Milan?
Usually yes. Como is about 24 miles away, Genoa is about 74 miles away and Turin is about 78 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Milan page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?
Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Milan.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
