Paw Print Keepsakes in Italy: what to know
In Italy, most families arrange aftercare through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria. Prints are commonly offered but not always mentioned, so it's worth asking by name. You can also take a print yourself at home, which gives you full control over timing and the number of copies.
Every country organizes pet aftercare its own way, and Italy is no exception. On any provider's list, look for three things: whether a print is included, what material it's made in, and whether it's taken before or after your pet leaves the clinic. Those answers matter more than the name on the van.
We cover 17 communities in Italy, from Rome, Milan and Naples to smaller towns.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
In Italy, where only around 38.16%[1] of the dead are cremated, a pet's goodbye often ends with a blanket and a spade rather than a collection van. Before you wrap your pet, pause for three small things: a paw print, a snip of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind an ear, and the collar and tag. Once the grave is filled, none of those can be gathered again.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[2]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Italy what's included before you choose.
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Italy the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[3], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[4] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[2] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[5] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[6] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

What the law in Italy does and doesn't cover
Rules in Italy say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
- Ask them to photograph the print and send it to you, so you know it's clear.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation where they are; the print can travel with either choice.
- Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts from everyone you deal with, so the pieces fit together afterwards.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
If you'd like ashes and the print together without wearing them, an ashes-in-glass piece needs only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[8] of ashes, and the paw can be engraved on its base or a matching frame. Use our jewelry ash capacity guide to see how far your pet's ashes will go, and our ashes sharing planner if several people want a piece.

Questions people ask
Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Italy?
Across Italy, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.
How many communities do you cover in Italy?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 17 communities in Italy, including Rome, Milan and Naples. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Italy?
Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Italy say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
Are there rules about paw prints in Italy?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Italy cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
Can children help make a paw print?
Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
