How owners in Kawasaki get a paw print
With family often living in other parts of Japan, Kawasaki households sometimes divide ashes so that grandparents or siblings each receive a share in a small keepsake urn or a pendant. A photograph, a clipping of fur or a few feathers can go with it. Let the provider know how many portions you need at the time of booking, because dividing the ashes is simpler before they are placed in the main urn.
The riverbanks of the Tama River are open, green space in a crowded city, and many Kawasaki residents want a memorial that brings some of that feeling home: a potted plant on the balcony, a small engraved stone, or a photo taken by the river. Before scattering ashes in a public place, check the rules that apply. A temple memorial or a garden at a relative's home are common alternatives.
In-home euthanasia vets in a big city are busy, but many bring a print kit to every visit. When you book, ask whether a clay paw print is included in the fee, whether they can take an ink print too for later engraving, and whether you can take it yourself while they wait. Doing it before the appointment, on a calm day, is often gentler for everyone.
Kawasaki's population is around 1,475,000, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Kanagawa communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Yokohama (7 miles, a larger centre), Setagaya (8 miles) and Minato (9 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
In Japan, about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Japan figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Kawasaki tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Getting a clean print in Kawasaki in any season
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Kawasaki, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
In some Asian cities, the public route leaves nothing behind. Hong Kong's government, for instance, advises owners that a bagged animal can go to a refuse collection point, from where it goes to landfill[4]. Any keepsake, including a print, then depends on you or a private provider. If cost is the worry in Kawasaki, a home print costs very little and can be taken before you decide anything else.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Kanagawa: Kanagawa costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Landlords, parks and permits in Kanagawa
Some towns and councils in Kanagawa run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.
Your paw print plan for Kawasaki
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
- Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Space is tight in a Kawasaki apartment, so many families choose a compact memorial: a small urn wrapped in a cloth cover on a shelf, a framed photo and a candle. Others prefer a pendant holding a little ash or a set of paw print tiles. Some later move ashes to a temple's shared pet grave in the Tokyo area, where services are held at set times of year.

Questions people ask
How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Kawasaki page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kawasaki?
Usually yes. Yokohama is about 7 miles away, Setagaya is about 8 miles away and Minato is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Do pet funeral packages in Kawasaki include a paw print?
Some do, but it varies. Pet funeral providers in Asia often sell packages with collection, a short ceremony, individual cremation and an urn, and a paw print or fur clipping may be included or offered as an extra. Ask for the package contents in writing, and if a print isn't listed, ask whether they can take one before cremation.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[6] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?
It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
