Setagaya, Tokyo
Who takes paw prints in Setagaya
Setagaya is famous for a temple said to be the birthplace of the beckoning-cat figure, and the neighbourhoods here are full of small shrines and temples where people leave offerings. That culture of small, personal remembrance carries over to pets: incense and flowers beside an urn, a memorial tablet, or a joint memorial service for animals held once a year.
Setagaya homes are compact, so most families choose a small memorial: a palm-sized urn on a shelf or beside the family altar, a pendant holding a fragment of bone or ash, a memorial tablet with the pet's name, or a framed paw print. Some divide the remains between a keepsake at home and a temple's shared memorial. Ask for prints or fur clippings at the first contact.
Big-city apartments make home prints easier than people expect. You don't need a garden or a workshop, just a clear kitchen table, a towel, the clay or card taped flat and good light from a window. If your pet is a senior, pick a quiet evening after a meal or a walk, when they're drowsy and happy to lie still. A living pet who is relaxed gives a far crisper print than a rushed one taken in the last hours.
Setagaya's population is around 940,000, the 2nd-largest of the 3 Tokyo communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Tokyo (2 miles, a larger centre), Minato (6 miles) and Kawasaki (8 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
99.97%[1]
In 2023, 99.97% of deaths in Japan were cremated (1364 crematoria).
~$32[2]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Japan and the print window
With about 99.97%[1] of people in Japan cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.
For the Japan figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Setagaya rather than as pet data.
When the weather works against clay and ink
Local weather in Setagaya affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
Hong Kong shows how packages are built: one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[4], with extras added on top. A paw print is typically one of the least expensive extras. Wherever you are, ask providers in Setagaya to price the print separately so you can compare fairly.

What Tokyo allows after your pet dies
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Tokyo, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
- Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation where they are; the print can travel with either choice.
- Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts from everyone you deal with, so the pieces fit together afterwards.
Remembering your pet through their print
Setagaya's cherry trees along the Tama River and in its big parks bloom each spring, and many families decide on a lasting memorial as the seasons turn. A potted tree or shrub with a small memorial stone on a balcony or doorstep, a photo stand with a seasonal flower, or jewellery holding a pinch of ashes all fit a small Tokyo home.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Setagaya?
The closest communities we cover are Tokyo (about 2 miles), Minato (about 6 miles) and Kawasaki (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Setagaya too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Japan attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Japan human cremation rate at about 99.97%[1]. We show it on the Setagaya page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
Can a paw print be taken after my pet has died?
Yes. A print can usually be taken in the first hours after death at home, and later by a vet or crematory before cremation. If the leg has stiffened, press the clay gently onto the paw rather than forcing the paw down. A print from a relaxed, living pet tends to be crisper, which is why many owners take one while their pet is still a healthy senior.
