Paw Print Keepsakes in Luxembourg: what to know

Makers in Luxembourg and abroad can turn a paw print into silver, glass, ceramic, embroidery or a tattoo, and most work from a photo or scan. That means you can keep the original safely at home and shop around. The only part that can't wait is taking the print itself.

Every country organizes pet aftercare its own way, and Luxembourg is no exception. On any provider's list, look for three things: whether a print is included, what material it's made in, and whether it's taken before or after your pet leaves the clinic. Those answers matter more than the name on the van.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

We don't have a dependable cremation rate for Luxembourg, and pet aftercare can vary a lot from one district to the next. Where services are thin, the print is the part of aftercare that's fully in your hands. A home kit, a quiet room and ten minutes are all it takes, and the result doesn't rely on what any local provider does or doesn't offer.

Paw print costs around Luxembourg, line by line

Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[1] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[2]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Luxembourg, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[3]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Luxembourg what's included before you choose.

Local rules worth knowing in Luxembourg

Some towns and councils in Luxembourg run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. For a horse, book the farrier to trim and clean the hoof first. Pick out the sole and dry it well.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Many families keep the clay print on a shelf beside a photo and the collar, and have a copy made for each person who loved the pet. If the family is spread out, a scanned print can be engraved onto several small keepsakes, so nobody has to choose who keeps the original.

Questions people ask

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Luxembourg?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Luxembourg, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

Are there rules about paw prints in Luxembourg?

No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Luxembourg cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.

Can my vet in Luxembourg take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Is it better to use a local maker in Luxembourg or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.
