Paw Print Keepsakes in Portugal: what to know

Makers in Portugal and abroad can turn a paw print into silver, glass, ceramic, embroidery or a tattoo, and most work from a photo or scan. That means you can keep the original safely at home and shop around. The only part that can't wait is taking the print itself.

Because a paw print must be taken before cremation or burial, it's the one keepsake in Portugal that depends on planning rather than shopping. Jewelry, engraving and art can all be ordered later from a scan. The print itself can't be remade, so it's the first thing to arrange.

How Portugal thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

Customs around death differ widely in Portugal, and local figures for cremation are hard to pin down. What is universal is that a print can only be made while your pet is still here, or in the hours after death. Whatever the local habit for burial or cremation, plan the print first.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Portugal the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[1], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

In Portugal, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[2], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[3].

Landlords, parks and permits in Portugal

Rules in Portugal mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
  3. Ask for two copies if more than one person in the family would like one.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
  5. Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
  6. Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.

Ways families in Portugal keep a print close

Some people find that making the print is itself a kind of goodbye. If that's you, it's fine to take several, keep the one that feels right and let children decorate the rest. There's no wrong way to do this, and no deadline for finishing the keepsake once the print is safely made.

Questions people ask

How much does a paw print cost in Portugal?

Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[2], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[3]. Ask local providers for a written price.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Portugal?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Portugal?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Portugal, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Portugal?

Across Portugal, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.

Can my vet in Portugal take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.
