Lisbon, Portugal
Who takes paw prints in Lisbon
In a Lisbon apartment, space is often limited, so many families choose a compact urn, a framed paw print, or a potted plant on a balcony as a memorial. Glazed tiles, azulejos, are part of Lisbon's identity, and a small decorated tile with your pet's name can make a lovely memorial on a wall or shelf. Stone and ceramic handle the strong summer sun far better than painted wood.
Portugal has a strong Catholic tradition of remembering the dead, and cemetery visits around All Saints' Day are still common. Some Lisbon families bring that sense of remembrance to a pet, keeping a small urn with a photo and a candle, or placing ashes in a pet cemetery. Others prefer a keepsake with a paw print, or a pendant that holds a little ash.
Large crematories serving Lisbon may handle many animals in a day, so ask how they keep your pet's print matched to your pet. A good answer involves a name label or ID tag that stays with your pet from collection through to the return of the ashes, and the print packed with the urn. It's also fair to ask for a quick photo of the print before cremation, so you can check it's clear while there's still time to redo it.
Lisbon is home to about 505,000 people, the largest of the 2 Portugal communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Cascais (15 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
~$32[1]
Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.
3-5% of body weight[2]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Aftercare habits in Portugal vary with family, faith and where you live, and reliable cremation figures aren't published. A paw print sits comfortably alongside any tradition: it can be kept at home, set into a grave marker or engraved beside a name. It's worth arranging before the rest.
Seasons in Lisbon and a print that lasts
Whatever the season in Lisbon, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[3] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[4]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Lisbon, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

What Portugal allows after your pet dies
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Portugal, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
Getting a paw print in Lisbon, step by step
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
- Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, call the crematory first thing the next morning and ask for one at intake.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.
Keeping the print and the memory close
The Tagus estuary and the Atlantic coast, from Cascais to the Costa da Caparica, are part of how many Lisboetas spend time with their pets. Some families want to scatter part of a pet's ashes by the sea or in the green spaces of Monsanto. Do this quietly and away from beach crowds, and check local rules first. Keeping a small portion in a keepsake gives you something to hold.

Questions people ask
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[5] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Lisbon?
Local published prices for prints are scarce outside the US; most vets and crematories include them in a package or quote on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[6] and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[7]. Ask for a written local price.
Can a paw print be taken after my pet has died?
Yes. A print can usually be taken in the first hours after death at home, and later by a vet or crematory before cremation. If the leg has stiffened, press the clay gently onto the paw rather than forcing the paw down. A print from a relaxed, living pet tends to be crisper, which is why many owners take one while their pet is still a healthy senior.
Should I use a local jeweler or an online maker for a paw print pendant?
Both work. A local jeweler or engraver in Lisbon lets you see samples and hand over the print in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original never has to leave your home. Ask either one for a proof before they start, and check how long it will take: a custom silver print charm takes about two weeks at one US maker[8].
