Getting your pet's paw print in Seoul

Seoul, South Korea

How owners in Seoul get a paw print

In Seoul, ashes are often turned into memorial beads or stones, small glossy pieces that can be kept in a glass case or dish. They take up very little space in an apartment and many families find them easier to live with than an urn. If that interests you, ask the cremation provider whether they offer it directly or whether the ashes need to go to a specializt afterward, and what the cost adds.

Keepsake jewelry is popular with Seoul pet owners who commute and want something small they can carry every day, such as a pendant holding a pinch of ashes or a ring engraved with a pet's name. Ask for a small portion of ashes to be set aside before the rest are sealed in an urn. A lock of fur, collar or name tag kept in a shadow box is another quiet way to remember.

Many households in Seoul rent, move often or have more than one pet. Prints travel well: a sealed clay disc or a framed ink print moves with you, while a garden burial can't. If you have two or three animals, consider taking all their prints on the same afternoon, while everyone is well. It turns a sad job into an ordinary family project and means nobody is left out later.

About 9,776,000 people live in Seoul, which makes it the largest of the 2 South Korea communities we cover.

Seoul sits within easy reach of Gangnam (5 miles), Incheon (17 miles) and Daejeon (87 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Seoul; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

In South Korea, about 92.43%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

We take the South Korea rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Seoul, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Seasons in Seoul and a print that lasts

If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Seoul, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

Hong Kong shows how packages are built: one provider lists basic individual cremation at HKD 1,300 for a 1 to 5 kg pet[4], with extras added on top. A paw print is typically one of the least expensive extras. Wherever you are, ask providers in Seoul to price the print separately so you can compare fairly.

Burial, scattering and prints in South Korea

Rules in South Korea say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Decide who will take the print: you at home, your vet, or the crematory at intake. The earlier in the process, the more control you have.
  2. Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
  3. Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
  4. Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
  5. Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
  6. If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Because burying ashes in parks or on apartment grounds isn't permitted, most Seoul families keep their pet's remains at home or in a memorial niche at a pet funeral facility. A compact urn, a framed photo and a paw print make a simple memorial corner in an apartment. If you choose a niche outside the city, ask about visiting hours and fees for keeping remains there over the years.

Questions people ask

How do South Korea attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the South Korea human cremation rate at about 92.43%[1]. We show it on the Seoul page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Seoul?

The closest communities we cover are Gangnam (about 5 miles), Incheon (about 17 miles) and Daejeon (about 87 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Seoul too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How long before the print and ashes come back in Seoul?

By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[6], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Seoul which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Seoul?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[7]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.

How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Seoul?

Local published prices for prints are scarce outside the US; most vets and crematories include them in a package or quote on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[8] and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[9]. Ask for a written local price.
