Getting your pet's paw print in Gothenburg

Gothenburg, Vastra Gotaland

Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Gothenburg

Swedish design taste shapes how many Gothenburg families remember a pet: clean-lined ceramic urns, pale wood boxes, simple engraved stones, understated silver jewelry. If you live in an apartment, something small for a bookshelf or windowsill works well; if you have a garden or a summer cottage, a stone or a tree urn is common. Ask for a size guide so it fits the space.

Sweden has a long tradition of lighting candles on graves at All Saints, and some Gothenburg families extend that to pets, with a lantern beside a memorial stone in the garden or a candle next to an urn at home. A pet cemetery plot is another option for families who want a place to visit. Ask what care and fees are involved over time.

In a city the size of Gothenburg, the question is rarely whether someone can take a paw print. Most general practices, emergency hospitals, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories here offer one. The risk is the opposite: a busy clinic handling several goodbyes a day can simply forget. If you want a print, say so when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether the original will come back with the ashes or separately.

With roughly 583,000 residents, Gothenburg is one of the Vastra Gotaland communities we cover.

A pet at home in Gothenburg

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Sweden

In Sweden, about 84.69%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

Heat, humidity, cold and drying times

We don't have local weather data for Gothenburg, so here's the general rule: prints dislike extremes. Clay wants a room at ordinary indoor temperature, out of sun and drafts, for two or three days. Ink wants a dry paw and a dry card. Plaster and resin want warmth to set, but not heat. If a room is comfortable for you in a sweater or a T-shirt, it's fine for a print.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[4]. In Gothenburg, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.

Landlords, parks and permits in Vastra Gotaland

Some towns and councils in Vastra Gotaland run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Pick a quiet, settled moment, perhaps once they've eaten or come back from a walk, and make the print then. Prints taken while a pet is alive tend to come out sharpest.
  2. Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
  3. Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
  4. Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
  5. Dry clay slowly indoors over two to three days, flipping it now and then, and finish with a coat of matte acrylic sealer.
  6. Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.

Keeping the print and the memory close

The archipelago and the coast are central to life in Gothenburg, and some families take a little of a pet's ashes to a favorite rock or shore. If that appeals, choose a quiet spot, keep the rest at home in an urn or keepsake, and respect local rules and landowners. A framed photo from that place, set beside the memorial, can tie home and sea together.

Questions people ask

How do Sweden attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Sweden human cremation rate at about 84.69%[1]. We show it on the Gothenburg page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How long before the print and ashes come back in Gothenburg?

By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[5], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Gothenburg which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.

Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?

It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.

How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Gothenburg?

Local published prices for prints are scarce outside the US; most vets and crematories include them in a package or quote on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[6] and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[7]. Ask for a written local price.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Gothenburg?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[8]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
