A paw print to keep, in Emirates Hills

Emirates Hills, Dubai

How owners in Emirates Hills get a paw print

Islamic tradition favours burial, and cremation of people is rare among Emirati families, while many expatriate residents come from countries where cremation is normal. That mix shapes pet memorials in Emirates Hills: some families keep ashes in an urn in the majlis or living room, others prefer a garden stone or a framed paw print. Choose whatever reflects your own customs and your animal.

Dubai's sun and dust are hard on outdoor memorials. Dark stone becomes too hot to touch, cheap resin fades, and fine sand works into engraved lettering. Pale granite, marble and bronze last far better, especially in a shaded corner of the garden near a palm or a frangipani. Indoors, glass, ceramic and metal urns all hold up well in air-conditioned rooms.

Farm and country homes around Emirates Hills often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.

With roughly 5,000 residents, Emirates Hills is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Dubai communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Emirates Hills are based about 12 miles away in Dubai, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Dubai (13 miles, a larger centre), Sharjah (26 miles, a larger centre) and Abu Dhabi (65 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

Published cremation figures for United Arab Emirates are patchy, so we can't say how common it is here. What we can say is that a print fits every custom, whether it ends up on a family altar, beside a grave or on a plain bookshelf. If local practice is unfamiliar to you, perhaps because you've recently moved, ask your vet what most families do, then take your print before that path begins.

Getting a clean print in Emirates Hills in any season

Local weather in Emirates Hills affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

What owners in Emirates Hills typically pay for a print

In some countries, such as the UAE, pet burial isn't permitted and families who want ashes arrange private cremation, at about AED 2,300 to 2,700 for a pet up to 30 kg[3]. A paw print is usually a small extra within that. Rules and prices in Emirates Hills may differ, so ask your vet what's available and take your own print at home if in doubt.

The Dubai price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Rules in Dubai that touch on keepsakes

Some towns and councils in Dubai run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

In the UAE, burying pets isn't permitted, so families who want a keepsake usually arrange private cremation[5]. That makes the print especially important, because there's no grave to visit. Take it at home in an air-conditioned room before collection, or ask the provider to take one first. Summer heat means the first hours matter, so keep your pet cool.

Your paw print plan for Emirates Hills

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
  2. Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
  5. If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Many Emirates Hills residents will eventually move on, to another Gulf city or back home, and memorials that travel suit that life. A compact urn, a pendant holding a trace of ash, or a paw print set in resin packs easily into hand luggage. Check the rules of the country you are moving to before carrying ashes, and keep the cremation certificate with them.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Emirates Hills?

The closest communities we cover are Dubai (about 13 miles), Sharjah (about 26 miles) and Abu Dhabi (about 65 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Emirates Hills too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Where are the providers that serve Emirates Hills actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Dubai, about 12 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Emirates Hills and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can I get a hoof print from my horse?

Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.

How do I get a nose print from my cat?

Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.

Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?

Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
