How owners in Sheffield get a paw print
With the Peak District on the doorstep, some Sheffield families scatter a little of a pet's ashes on the moors or by a favorite river. Much of that moorland is privately owned or managed by conservation bodies, so it is courteous to ask first and to pick somewhere well away from reservoirs and footpaths. The rest can be kept at home in a keepsake urn or pendant, or divided among family members.
Sheffield's cutlers and small workshops, from Kelham Island to the Little Mesters' tradition, still shape the city's taste for well-made things. A locally turned wooden box, a hand-engraved plaque, a pottery urn or a silver charm can all be commissioned. Allow several weeks for anything bespoke; the ashes are perfectly safe in the plain container they are returned in until then.
Big-city apartments make home prints easier than people expect. You don't need a garden or a workshop, just a clear kitchen table, a towel, the clay or card taped flat and good light from a window. If your pet is a senior, pick a quiet evening after a meal or a walk, when they're drowsy and happy to lie still. A living pet who is relaxed gives a far crisper print than a rushed one taken in the last hours.
With roughly 584,000 residents, Sheffield is the 4th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Leeds (29 miles), Nottingham (32 miles) and Manchester (33 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Sheffield routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
175,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Sheffield
How we calculated this
584,000 ÷ 2.4 = 243,333 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 175,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
175,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 14,500 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
With about 83.0%[5] of people in England cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.
The England figure comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Sheffield, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
UK paw print prices are rarely published, because most are sold as add-ons through vets and crematoria. That's changing: under the CMA's remedies, vet practices must set out prices for communal, individual and add-on cremation options[6], so it's reasonable to ask for a written list in Sheffield. For a 3D keepsake, one UK body-casting studio charges from about £120 to cast a small dog's paw pads in resin, with medium and large breeds about a fifth and a third more[7].

Landlords, parks and permits in England
Burial rules in many places, including England, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the England level first; our England rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Sheffield or your HOA adds anything.
Your paw print plan for Sheffield
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.
Ways families in Sheffield keep a print close
Sheffield's steel heritage gives memorials here a particular character. Many families choose a steel or stainless urn, a small engraved plate or a piece of jewelry made locally, while others prefer a traditional wooden box, a framed paw print or a stone for the garden. Whatever you choose, ask for a size guide so it fits the space you have in mind.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sheffield?
Usually yes. Leeds is about 29 miles away, Nottingham is about 32 miles away and Manchester is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Sheffield big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 175,000 Sheffield households keep a dog or cat and around 14,500 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 584,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is cremation common in England?
For people, yes: about 83.0%[5] of England deaths end in cremation, according to Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sheffield follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Why do so many owners miss the chance to take a print?
Because a print has a window. By our estimate, around 14,500 dogs and cats die in Sheffield each year, many of them suddenly or at an emergency clinic, when a clay kit is the last thing on anyone's mind. Taking a print while your pet is well, or asking for one when you book aftercare, is the simplest way not to miss it.
Why take a paw print in Sheffield if I already have plenty of photos?
Photos show what your pet looked like; a print records something you touched every day, at actual size. We estimate Sheffield has around 175,000 dog- or cat-owning homes and loses about 14,500 of those pets a year. Most of those owners have hundreds of photos. The difference is that photos can be found later, while a print only exists if someone makes it before the body is cremated or buried, which is why it's worth doing first.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
