Paw Print Keepsakes in England: what to know
Two free tools help owners across England plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.
Getting a paw print in England works much the same everywhere: you take it yourself, your vet takes it, or the crematory takes it before cremation. What changes from place to place is how much choice you have. In the bigger cities there are in-home vets, emergency hospitals and local makers who turn prints into jewelry or art. In smaller towns, the local vet is usually the one moment to ask.

How we calculated this
The sum of our per-city estimates for the 33 communities in England on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Cremation is the norm for people in England (about 83.0%[1] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
That England rate is a human statistic published by Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What owners in England typically pay for a print
If you're thinking beyond a clay print, UK makers publish prices for ash jewellery that you can pair with an engraved print. Handmade pet-ash pendants from one maker start at £180 to £299[2], and a glass pet-ashes pendant from a Bath studio costs £170[3]. The print itself is usually the cheapest part; the finishing is what to budget for in England.
UK paw print prices are rarely published, because most are sold as add-ons through vets and crematoria. That's changing: under the CMA's remedies, vet practices must set out prices for communal, individual and add-on cremation options[4], so it's reasonable to ask for a written list in England. For a 3D keepsake, one UK body-casting studio charges from about £120 to cast a small dog's paw pads in resin, with medium and large breeds about a fifth and a third more[5].
| Keepsake | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resin cast of a small dog's paw pads | from £120[5] | Medium breeds about a fifth more, large about a third more |
| Glass pet-ashes pendant | £170[3] | Holds ashes; pair with an engraved print |
| Handmade pet-ash pendant | £180 to £299[2] | Price depends on design |
| Vet clay or ink print | Ask for the price list | Vets must set out add-on prices[4] |

Landlords, parks and permits in England
Some towns and councils in England run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
If you plan to scatter some ashes, keep a pinch back before you do. A pendant with your pet's print on the front and a little ash inside is one of the most popular pairings, and our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how little each piece holds.

Questions people ask
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in England say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
How many communities do you cover in England?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 33 communities in England, including London, Birmingham and Leeds. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
Where can I get a paw print keepsake in England?
Across England, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.
What do other owners in England choose for a paw print keepsake?
We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of England, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
Are there rules about paw prints in England?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in England cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
