Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Burial is still the familiar path in Northern Ireland; cremation covers only about 24.2%[5] of the dead there, and some owners worry that making a keepsake of a pet's paw will seem odd to the neighbors. It isn't odd at all. A print is a quiet, gentle memorial, not unlike keeping a curl from a baby's first haircut. Make it for yourself, and share it only if and when you want to.

Local rules worth knowing in Northern Ireland
You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Northern Ireland are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.

In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Your paw print plan for Belfast

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Burial is still the tradition for people in Northern Ireland, and cremation is much less common here than in the rest of the UK. That can shape pet memorials too: some families want a grave or a marked spot in the garden, while others choose cremation so they can keep their pet close. Both are fine. Is Belfast big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belfast?

Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[9] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
