A paw print to keep, in Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland

Who takes paw prints in Edinburgh

With many Edinburgh households in flats, memorials often need to fit indoors. A compact urn, a framed paw print or a small keepsake is practical in a tenement flat, while families with gardens in Morningside or Corstorphine may bury ashes under a shrub. If you might move, choose something portable, and consider sharing ashes among family members who live in different places.

Scattering ashes somewhere meaningful is a common wish in Edinburgh, whether in the Pentland Hills, along the Water of Leith or by the sea at Portobello. Scotland's outdoor access traditions are generous, but scattering is still wise to do discreetly and with respect for other people and landowners. For an outdoor marker, choose stone or slate, which stands up to the city's wind and rain.

Apartment and condo living in Edinburgh adds a practical wrinkle. Collection teams may need a freight elevator, a loading bay or a parking permit, and building staff often ask for a set arrival time. That fixes the moment your pet leaves, so treat the print as something to finish before that slot. Book collection for an hour after the vet's visit rather than straight after, and you'll have room for a clay print and an ink copy without watching the clock.

With roughly 548,000 residents, Edinburgh is the 2nd-largest of the 4 Scotland communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are Dundee (36 miles), Glasgow (42 miles) and Newcastle (91 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Edinburgh too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

165,000

Edinburgh: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

548,000 ÷ 2.4 = 228,333 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 165,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

13,500

dog and cat deaths per year in Edinburgh, our estimate

How we calculated this

165,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 13,500 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

41%[1]

41% of UK households own a dog.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

31%[3]

31% of UK households own a cat.

11.74 years[4]

UK cats have a life expectancy at birth of 11.74 years.

We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in Edinburgh

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Because Scotland cremates about 74.5%[5] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.

The Scotland figure comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

When the weather works against clay and ink

Whatever the season in Edinburgh, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

UK paw print prices are rarely published, because most are sold as add-ons through vets and crematoria. That's changing: under the CMA's remedies, vet practices must set out prices for communal, individual and add-on cremation options[6], so it's reasonable to ask for a written list in Edinburgh. For a 3D keepsake, one UK body-casting studio charges from about £120 to cast a small dog's paw pads in resin, with medium and large breeds about a fifth and a third more[7].

We keep the detailed Scotland price table on one page so it stays current: see Scotland prices.

Landlords, parks and permits in Scotland

Burial rules in many places, including Scotland, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

For what Edinburgh itself says, see City of Edinburgh Council. Its pages cover municipal collection; a private cremation is arranged separately.

In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.

We keep Scotland's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Scotland rules summary. Before a home burial in Edinburgh, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

Your paw print plan for Edinburgh

  1. Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, the first few hours usually leave enough time to make a print. Settle them on a towel somewhere cool.
  2. Gather what you need: clay warmed in your hands, or card taped to a board with a pet-safe ink pad, plus a damp cloth.
  3. If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Press it gently onto the pads rather than forcing the paw down.
  4. Take a nose print too should you want one; barely touch the nose with the ink pad or an inkless wipe.
  5. Call your vet or crematory afterwards, and let them know a print has already been made so they can skip that step.
  6. Let the print dry indoors, away from heaters and sunny windows, before you frame or post it anywhere.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Edinburgh has one of the most famous animal memorials anywhere: the statue of Greyfriars Bobby by the kirkyard, which visitors still seek out every day. The city understands how deeply people remember their animals. For your own pet, a memorial can be as simple as an urn on a mantelpiece, a keepsake stone, or a piece of jewellery holding a small amount of ash.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Edinburgh?

Usually yes. Dundee is about 36 miles away, Glasgow is about 42 miles away and Newcastle is about 91 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Edinburgh page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) reports about 74.5%[5] of Scotland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Roughly how many pets die in Edinburgh each year?

Our estimate is around 13,500. It comes from Edinburgh's population (about 548,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 165,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

How do I get my pet's paw print in Edinburgh?

You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.

How long before the print and ashes come back in Edinburgh?

By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[9], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Edinburgh which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.

How do I get a nose print from my cat?

Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
