Florence, Alabama
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Florence
The Shoals are known worldwide for their recording studios and music history, and some Florence families give a pet's memorial a musical touch: a favorite song played at a backyard farewell, a stone engraved with a lyric, a photo framed beside a guitar or a record. Others keep it simple with a keepsake or paw print. Choose what feels most like the pet you knew.
About 42% of Alabamians are cremated, and many Shoals families still favor burial, so a pet's ashes are often buried at home under a stone or a favorite tree. Some keep a small urn on a bookshelf instead, or wear jewelry holding a little ash, or hang a framed paw print by the door. There's no rush; the ashes can wait in a simple container until you decide.
Supplies are easy to find even in a small town. Air-dry modeling clay, a washable non-toxic ink pad, card stock and baby wipes are enough for a first print. A purpose-made kit is kinder for fluffy paws and cats, but it may take days to arrive, so buy one while your pet is still well rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
Florence's population is around 42,581, the 11th-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Florence are based about 61 miles away in Huntsville, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Muscle Shoals (6 miles), Athens (41 miles) and Decatur (42 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Florence as well.
Our estimate
15,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Florence has (estimate)
How we calculated this
42,581 ÷ 2.5 = 17,032 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,300
Florence families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
15,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,300 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Burial is still the familiar path in Alabama; cremation covers only about 42.3%[5] of the dead there, and some owners worry that making a keepsake of a pet's paw will seem odd to the neighbors. It isn't odd at all. A print is a quiet, gentle memorial, not unlike keeping a curl from a baby's first haircut. Make it for yourself, and share it only if and when you want to.
The Alabama figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
We don't have local weather data for Florence, so here's the general rule: prints dislike extremes. Clay wants a room at ordinary indoor temperature, out of sun and drafts, for two or three days. Ink wants a dry paw and a dry card. Plaster and resin want warmth to set, but not heat. If a room is comfortable for you in a sweater or a T-shirt, it's fine for a print.

What owners in Florence typically pay for a print
By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Florence are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

Landlords, parks and permits in Alabama
Some towns and councils in Alabama run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
To find your county or city office in Alabama, start with the official Alabama local government directory.
For Alabama's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Alabama guide. Local rules in Florence can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, since plenty of owners later have the hair plaited or cast in resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Ways families in Florence keep a print close
Families with land in Lauderdale County often choose an outdoor memorial: a tree planted with a biodegradable urn, a stone near the barn, or ashes scattered on a hillside with a view of the river valley. If relatives across the Shoals want to share, ask whether the ashes can be divided. Dogwoods and redbuds do well here if planted in the cool months.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Florence actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Huntsville, about 61 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Florence and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Alabama?
For people, yes: about 42.3%[5] of Alabama deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Florence follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Roughly how many pets die in Florence each year?
Our estimate is around 1,300. It comes from Florence's population (about 42,581), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 15,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Florence?
The closest communities we cover are Muscle Shoals (about 6 miles), Athens (about 41 miles) and Decatur (about 42 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Florence too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
