Chino, California
Who takes paw prints in Chino
The hills around Chino green up after winter rain and turn gold by early summer, so memorial trees are usually planted between December and March. Olives, oaks and pepper trees handle the heat and dry wind once established. Give a young tree a long soak every week of its first summer, and consider a ring of mulch around a tree urn to keep the soil cool.
Chino's larger lots mean many families have room for an outdoor memorial: an engraved stone near the paddock, a tree urn in the backyard, or a small statue among the roses. Families in the newer master-planned neighbourhoods on the south side, where yards are smaller and association rules apply, often prefer an indoor urn, a shadow box with the collar and tag, or a charm holding a few ashes.
One advantage of a town like Chino is that people know each other. Your vet team has probably met your pet many times and will understand why a print matters. Small practices often keep a clay kit on the shelf for exactly this. If they don't, ask whether you can bring your own and take the print together in a quiet room.
About 96,957 people live in Chino, which makes it the 75th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Riverside, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Chino run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Chino Hills (4 miles), Eastvale (5 miles) and Ontario (6 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Chino too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
35,500
Chino: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
96,957 ÷ 2.5 = 38,783 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 35,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,950
Estimated dog and cat losses in Chino each year
How we calculated this
35,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,950 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Chino tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Weather in Chino and your pet's print
Chino has a fairly mild climate, which is good news for prints. Air-dry clay usually dries in two or three days at room temperature, and ink behaves predictably. The main thing to watch is damp: in February, the wettest month, clay can take longer to harden, so keep it off windowsills and away from bathrooms until it feels completely dry and light.
Mild days in Chino make an old-fashioned sand cast possible. Press your pet's paw into a tray of damp, fine sand, pour in a thin mix of plaster and lift it out once it has set: you get a rough, textured paw that looks like a fossil. It's messier than clay, so work outdoors, but many families love the result. Avoid February, when damp air slows the plaster.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[6] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[7]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[8]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[9].

Landlords, parks and permits in California
If you might move away from California one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what California allows, set out below.

For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Chino can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
- Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation where they are; the print can travel with either choice.
- Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
- If you're driving home with your pet, the car needs to stay cool; make your own print once you're back, ahead of any burial or pickup.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Chino families often have deep roots in the area's farming and ranching past, and their memorials show it: a framed hoof or paw print beside a photo from the fair, a painted stone by the barn, or a name burned into a fence board. If you want a print made, say so at the first contact, because it has to be taken before the animal leaves your property.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Chino?
Usually yes. Chino Hills is about 4 miles away, Eastvale is about 5 miles away and Ontario is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Riverside to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Riverside (roughly 16 miles from Chino) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Chino page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Chino each year?
Our estimate is around 2,950. It comes from Chino's population (about 96,957), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 35,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?
Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?
Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.
