Getting a paw print in Davis: the local picture
Students, postdocs and university staff often move on after a few years, and a memorial may need to travel across the country or the world. A small sealed container, a keepsake that fits in a carry-on, or a digital photo album can go wherever life leads next. If you expect to move soon, ask a provider for the most compact sturdy container they offer.
Davis gardens and greenbelts offer natural settings for memorials: a tree planted in a pet's name, a stone among the tomatoes and sunflowers, a small marker in a backyard bed. Many Davis residents rent, and some live in cohousing with shared gardens, so talk to your landlord or neighbors before planting. A potted memorial or an indoor piece avoids that question entirely.
Around Davis, a home-visit vet may be covering a wide area and can only give you a rough arrival window. Waiting is hard, but it can also be the time to take the print, while your pet is settled and you're not watching the door. Lay out a towel, the clay and a few treats in the room where they're resting. By the time the car pulls in, the keepsake can already be drying on the table.
About 66,110 people live in Davis, which makes it the 126th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Sacramento, about 14 miles (22 km) away, which is where some providers serving Davis are based.
Our pages for Dixon (8 miles), Woodland (9 miles) and West Sacramento (10 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Davis as well.
Our estimate
24,500
Davis: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
66,110 ÷ 2.5 = 26,444 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 24,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,050
Davis families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
24,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,050 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in California
Cremation accounts for about 70.5%[5] of human deaths in California, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Davis only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Hot months in Davis are the best time for an outdoor project in the shade, but not for drying a print outdoors. Direct sun on an air-dry clay disc can warp it and crack the thin edges of the toes. Bring it inside, set it on a wire rack so air reaches both sides and give it two or three days before sealing it with a matte acrylic sealer.
Strong sun in Davis, especially around July, fades ink faster than most people expect. A framed paw print in a bright hallway can lose its crispness within a few summers. Hang it on a wall that doesn't catch direct light, choose UV-filtering glass and keep a scan of the original. And never leave a clay print or a resin cast inside a parked car, a garage or an attic in summer, where temperatures climb far above 95°F.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Davis, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

What California allows after your pet dies
Nothing in California restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Davis.
The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Davis may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Decide who will take the print: you at home, your vet, or the crematory at intake. The earlier in the process, the more control you have.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Remembering your pet through their print
Davis has a strong environmental streak, and many families here lean toward memorials with a lighter footprint: a biodegradable urn, a tree-planting vessel, or pieces in natural wood, clay or stone. Others prefer something lasting and personal, such as a pendant or a framed portrait. There is no single right choice; pick what reflects your pet and your values. Ask how any biodegradable vessel should be stored until planting.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Davis?
The closest communities we cover are Dixon (about 8 miles), Woodland (about 9 miles) and West Sacramento (about 10 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Davis too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many pet owners live in Davis?
By our estimate, about 24,500 households in Davis have at least one dog or cat, and around 2,050 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 66,110, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
How does Davis's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Davis, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Davis page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
