A paw print to keep, in Encinitas

Encinitas, California

Paw print keepsakes in Encinitas: where to start

Encinitas has deep flower-growing roots, and many gardens here are full of succulents, native plants and blooms that thrive by the sea. A memorial fits easily among them: a flat stone set into a planting bed, a small ceramic marker, or a tree-style urn in a big glazed pot. Morning damp and salt air are hard on cheap metal and resin, so choose stone or fired clay for anything that lives outside.

Many Encinitas families imagine a pet's ashes going back to the Pacific off Moonlight Beach or Swami's. Scattering at sea has to happen well offshore under federal rules, and the beaches themselves have local rules, so a boat trip is often the practical way to do it. Holding back a small share for a pendant or keepsake box at home means part of your pet stays with the family.

Farm and country homes around Encinitas often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.

Encinitas is home to about 60,736 people, the 139th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. San Diego, roughly 24 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Encinitas run from there.

Nearby, we also have local pages for San Marcos (8 miles), Carlsbad (9 miles) and Vista (10 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

22,500

How many dog- or cat-owning households Encinitas has (estimate)

How we calculated this

60,736 ÷ 2.5 = 24,294 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 22,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

1,850

Estimated dog and cat losses in Encinitas each year

How we calculated this

22,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,850 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in Encinitas

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

With about 70.5%[5] of people in California cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.

We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Encinitas, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Clay, ink and the local climate

Humidity in Encinitas can still catch you out, even in a mild year. Air-dry clay that feels firm on top may be soft underneath, and sealing it too soon can trap moisture and leave a dull, cloudy finish. Turn the print daily, wait until it's pale and light all through, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer before framing.

Mild weather gives you choices that colder or hotter places don't. You can make a concrete stepping stone with your pet's paw pressed in almost any month, plant around it, or set a cast print into the garden where they used to lie. If you're not ready to decide, take the print in clay or ink now and plan the outdoor piece later.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Encinitas, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

We keep the detailed California price table on one page so it stays current: see California prices.

Burial, scattering and prints in California

There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where California does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.

Not sure which office covers Encinitas? The California local government directory is the official list.

The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Encinitas's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Your paw print plan for Encinitas

  1. Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
  3. Ask for two copies if more than one person in the family would like one.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
  5. Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
  6. Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.

From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone

Encinitas is full of artists and makers, especially along the Leucadia stretch of Coast Highway 101, and many families here want a memorial made by hand. A thrown ceramic urn, blown glass with ash swirled into it, or a custom pendant can all be commissioned. There is no rush: have the ashes returned in a plain container and choose the final piece when you feel ready.

Questions people ask

Why does the Encinitas page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Where are the providers that serve Encinitas actually based?

Some are local, and some run from San Diego, about 24 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Encinitas and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Does the Encinitas climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 71°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Is Encinitas big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 22,500 Encinitas households keep a dog or cat and around 1,850 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 60,736), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.

Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?

Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
