Fairfax, California
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Fairfax
Fairfax has a strong do-it-yourself, handmade culture, and memorials here often reflect it: a hand-built wooden box, a glazed jar thrown in a nearby studio, a garden shrine with stones and prayer flags. There is room for any approach. If you plan to make or commission something, have the crematory send the remains back in a plain box and take your time; no decision is due in the early weeks.
Shade, damp and winter flooding shape what lasts outdoors in Fairfax. Moss grows on wood and soft stone within a season or two, and low ground near creeks can wash out in storms. Slate, granite and bronze weather well, and placing a marker on higher ground keeps it safe. A living memorial, such as a fern, huckleberry or native iris, suits the canyon light.
Small towns rarely have a pet memorial shop, but they nearly always have someone who engraves: a monument company that letters headstones, a trophy and awards shop, or a sign maker with a laser. Many will engrave a paw print from a clean scan onto slate, wood, metal or a garden stone. Take them a photo of your pet's print and ask whether they can reproduce the real pad shapes, not a generic clip-art paw.
Fairfax is home to about 7,417 people, the 293rd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Fairfax are based about 17 miles away in San Francisco, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Fairfax often end up using a provider from San Anselmo (2 miles), Ross (3 miles) and Kentfield (3 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
2,750
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Fairfax
How we calculated this
7,417 ÷ 2.5 = 2,967 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 2,750. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

dog and cat deaths per year in Fairfax, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,750 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 230 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Cremation accounts for about 70.5%[5] of human deaths in California, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.

When the weather works against clay and ink
Humidity in Fairfax can still catch you out, even in a mild year. Air-dry clay that feels firm on top may be soft underneath, and sealing it too soon can trap moisture and leave a dull, cloudy finish. Turn the print daily, wait until it's pale and light all through, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer before framing.
Because the weather in Fairfax is rarely extreme, many families choose to say goodbye outdoors: on a blanket in the garden, on a porch or under a favorite tree. If that's your plan, bring a board to work on. Grass and blankets are too soft for a clean print, so tape your card or set your clay on a cutting board or a large book, and have a damp cloth ready for the paws afterwards.

What owners in Fairfax typically pay for a print
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Fairfax, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Burial, scattering and prints in California
If you might move away from California one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what California allows, set out below.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Fairfax.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Fairfax, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: they can roll the clay, pick the card, or write the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
- Come back to it later. One child wants it framed the same week; another won't look at it for months.
Ways families in Fairfax keep a print close
Many Fairfax families lean toward eco-minded tributes: a compostable urn under a young redwood or oak, a scattering in their own garden, or a pinch of ash sealed into a pendant or polished stone. If you want an eco option, ask the provider about water-based cremation (aquamation) availability in the region, and whether a plant-based urn is suitable for the volume of ashes returned.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Fairfax actually based?
Some are local, and some run from San Francisco, about 17 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Fairfax and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Fairfax?
Usually yes. San Anselmo is about 2 miles away, Ross is about 3 miles away and Kentfield is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Fairfax?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is September, when highs around 70°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Fairfax page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Why is my clay paw print still soft days later?
Humidity slows air-dry clay a lot. In a damp spell, a print that feels firm on top can stay soft underneath for days. Keep it indoors on a wire rack, turn it every day and wait until it's pale and light all through before sealing. Don't put air-dry clay in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable, or it can crack.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
