Paw print keepsakes in Monterey: where to start
Monterey was California's capital under Spain and Mexico, and the town takes pride in preserving its adobes and its Cannery Row history. That sense of permanence often shapes memorials here: an engraved stone, a planted tree or a keepsake meant to be passed down. For households that may move on, a portable piece means the memory travels with you. Old adobe gardens here show how long a well-chosen stone can last.
Monterey homes range from historic cottages near downtown to hillside houses among the pines, and many have small, shady or sloping gardens. A small urn, a framed paw print or a pendant holding a little ash suits indoor spaces, while a stone or planted memorial can fit a courtyard or garden bed. Choose where the memorial will sit first, then pick the form and material.
Small towns rarely have a pet memorial shop, but they nearly always have someone who engraves: a monument company that letters headstones, a trophy and awards shop, or a sign maker with a laser. Many will engrave a paw print from a clean scan onto slate, wood, metal or a garden stone. Take them a photo of your pet's print and ask whether they can reproduce the real pad shapes, not a generic clip-art paw.
Monterey's population is around 28,953, the 221st-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is San Jose, about 51 miles (82 km) away, which is where some providers serving Monterey are based.
Monterey sits within easy reach of Pacific Grove (2 miles), Seaside (3 miles) and Carmel-by-the-Sea (3 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Monterey; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
10,500
Monterey: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
28,953 ÷ 2.5 = 11,581 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 10,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
890
Monterey families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 890 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in California
Cremation accounts for about 70.5%[5] of human deaths in California, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Monterey, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather works against clay and ink
Because Monterey rarely has extreme heat or hard frost, the timing of a print is really about your pet and your family, not the weather. A senior pet on a good day, a quiet weekend morning and an unhurried hour are worth more than any perfect season. Just avoid January for outdoor concrete work, when damp slows curing.
Because the weather in Monterey is rarely extreme, many families choose to say goodbye outdoors: on a blanket in the garden, on a porch or under a favorite tree. If that's your plan, bring a board to work on. Grass and blankets are too soft for a clean print, so tape your card or set your clay on a cutting board or a large book, and have a damp cloth ready for the paws afterwards.

Paw print costs around Monterey, line by line
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Monterey, check which approach each provider takes.

Local rules worth knowing in California
If you might move away from California one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what California allows, set out below.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Monterey.
For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Monterey can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Getting a paw print in Monterey, step by step
- Skip the table. Bring the clay or card to wherever your pet likes to lie, on the floor or on their own bed.
- Recruit a second person to stroke and reassure your pet while you work on the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats so your pet stays focused ahead and doesn't keep turning around.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
- Stop after a few tries when it's upsetting your pet. There's always tomorrow, or your vet can lend a hand at the next appointment.
- Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.
Remembering your pet through their print
Salt air, fog and wind are what outdoor memorials face in Monterey, rather than heat or frost. Granite and glazed ceramics weather well; some metals corrode and some woods soften in the damp. If you plant over a bio urn, a coastal native shrub or ground cover will usually handle the conditions, and the regular fog means less watering than inland gardens need.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Monterey actually based?
Some are local, and some run from San Jose, about 51 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Monterey and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Monterey page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[5] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Monterey?
Usually yes. Pacific Grove is about 2 miles away, Seaside is about 3 miles away and Carmel-by-the-Sea is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Monterey climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 74°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
