Paw print keepsakes in Seaside
Seaside has an estimated 11,500 dog- or cat-owning households. If yours is one of them, a print taken now, or before cremation, is the keepsake you can't go back for.

Getting a paw print in Seaside: the local picture
Salt air, fog and wind are what outdoor memorials face in Seaside, rather than heat or frost. Granite and glazed ceramics weather well; some metals and painted surfaces corrode near the coast. If you plant a bio urn, a coastal native plant will usually handle the conditions and need little care once it settles in. Keep engraved faces out of the direct path of the prevailing wind so salt spray does not dull the lettering, and rinse the surface now and then.
Seaside has a mix of older bungalows, apartments and newer homes on the former base lands, and many residents are military or university families who may move again. Portable memorials often make sense here: a small urn, a keepsake box or ashes jewelry that travels easily. If you are staying put, a garden stone or planting can mark a favorite spot in the yard.
Supplies are easy to find even in a small town. Air-dry modeling clay, a washable non-toxic ink pad, card stock and baby wipes are enough for a first print. A purpose-made kit is kinder for fluffy paws and cats, but it may take days to arrive, so buy one while your pet is still well rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
About 31,636 people live in Seaside, which makes it the 209th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Seaside are based about 50 miles away in San Jose, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Monterey (3 miles), Pacific Grove (4 miles) and Marina (5 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Seaside as well.
Our estimate
11,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Seaside
How we calculated this
31,636 ÷ 2.5 = 12,654 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
970
dog and cat deaths per year in Seaside, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 970 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in California
In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Seaside tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Getting a clean print in Seaside in any season
Humidity in Seaside can still catch you out, even in a mild year. Air-dry clay that feels firm on top may be soft underneath, and sealing it too soon can trap moisture and leave a dull, cloudy finish. Turn the print daily, wait until it's pale and light all through, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer before framing.
Mild days in Seaside make an old-fashioned sand cast possible. Press your pet's paw into a tray of damp, fine sand, pour in a thin mix of plaster and lift it out once it has set: you get a rough, textured paw that looks like a fossil. It's messier than clay, so work outdoors, but many families love the result. Avoid January, when damp air slows the plaster.

Paw print costs around Seaside, line by line
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Seaside, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What California allows after your pet dies
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for California, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Seaside's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your paw print plan for Seaside
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Many Seaside families have a connection to the military bases and schools on the Monterey Peninsula, and they often carry memorials with them from post to post. A framed paw print, a nameplate from a collar or a small urn that fits in a moving box can keep a pet's memory with you wherever you are stationed next. If you rent base housing, an indoor memorial avoids any questions about changes to the yard.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Seaside each year?
Our estimate is around 970. It comes from Seaside's population (about 31,636), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 11,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[5]. We show it on the Seaside page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Where are the providers that serve Seaside actually based?
Some are local, and some run from San Jose, about 50 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Seaside and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Seaside?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is September, when highs around 74°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How long does a clay paw print take to dry?
Air-dry clay usually takes two to three days at room temperature, longer in a damp spell such as January in Seaside. Dry it on a wire rack indoors, turning it daily, until it's pale and light all through. Bakeable clay can be fired in a home oven as the kit directs. Seal either kind with a matte acrylic sealer once dry.
Why take a paw print in Seaside if I already have plenty of photos?
Photos show what your pet looked like; a print records something you touched every day, at actual size. We estimate Seaside has around 11,500 dog- or cat-owning homes and loses about 970 of those pets a year. Most of those owners have hundreds of photos. The difference is that photos can be found later, while a print only exists if someone makes it before the body is cremated or buried, which is why it's worth doing first.
