Getting a paw print in Piedmont: the local picture
Piedmont's older homes often have built-in shelving, fireplaces and terraced gardens, which suit both indoor and outdoor tributes: a turned walnut urn on the mantel, a carved stone tucked among plantings, a small bronze plate set into a retaining wall. Take your time choosing. The remains can come home in a sealed temporary box and wait there until you know what feels right for the house.
Some Piedmont families commission memorials from Bay Area artists: a ceramic vessel, a small bronze casting, a pendant sealed around a pinch of ash. Others keep things simple with a plain urn beside a favorite portrait. When relatives in other cities hope for a portion, ask the cremation provider for several small sealed portions so nobody has to divide the ashes at the kitchen table.
Around Piedmont, a home-visit vet may be covering a wide area and can only give you a rough arrival window. Waiting is hard, but it can also be the time to take the print, while your pet is settled and you're not watching the door. Lay out a towel, the clay and a few treats in the room where they're resting. By the time the car pulls in, the keepsake can already be drying on the table.
With roughly 10,642 residents, Piedmont is the 286th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Oakland, roughly 2 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Piedmont run from there.
Families in Piedmont often end up using a provider from Oakland (3 miles, a larger centre), Emeryville (3 miles) and Berkeley (4 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
3,900
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Piedmont
How we calculated this
10,642 ÷ 2.5 = 4,257 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 3,900. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
330
Piedmont families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
3,900 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 330 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.
That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Piedmont only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Getting a clean print in Piedmont in any season
Piedmont has a fairly mild climate, which is good news for prints. Air-dry clay usually dries in two or three days at room temperature, and ink behaves predictably. The main thing to watch is damp: in December, the wettest month, clay can take longer to harden, so keep it off windowsills and away from bathrooms until it feels completely dry and light.
Because the weather in Piedmont is rarely extreme, many families choose to say goodbye outdoors: on a blanket in the garden, on a porch or under a favorite tree. If that's your plan, bring a board to work on. Grass and blankets are too soft for a clean print, so tape your card or set your clay on a cutting board or a large book, and have a damp cloth ready for the paws afterwards.

Paw print costs around Piedmont, line by line
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Piedmont vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

Landlords, parks and permits in California
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for California, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Piedmont.
Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Piedmont's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Getting a paw print in Piedmont, step by step
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: they can roll the clay, pick the card, or write the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, and tuck the original away out of harm's way.
- Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Shade from oaks, redwoods and tall hedges keeps many Piedmont gardens damp through winter, and that softens untreated wood and stains pale stone. Dark granite, slate and bronze cope far better outdoors. If you are planting a memorial shrub, choose an upper terrace with good drainage rather than a lower bed where runoff collects, and put it in during the rains so it roots before the dry season.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Oakland to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Oakland (roughly 2 miles from Piedmont) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Roughly how many pets die in Piedmont each year?
Our estimate is around 330. It comes from Piedmont's population (about 10,642), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 3,900 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Piedmont?
Usually yes. Oakland is about 3 miles away, Emeryville is about 3 miles away and Berkeley is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Piedmont?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is September, when highs around 70°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is there free support if making the print brings up a lot of grief?
Yes. Veterinary schools run free pet loss lines: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors[9], and Tufts runs a volunteer helpline on Monday to Thursday evenings, with 24-hour voicemail[10]. Strong feelings while you hold your pet's paw are normal, and some people find the print is the moment it all becomes real. Our guides also cover early grief.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
