Whittier, California
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Whittier
Some Whittier families like the idea of scattering ashes in the Puente Hills, where they spent time with their pets. The preserve has its own rules, so check with the managing authority first. Many people keep part of the ashes at home, in a keepsake urn, pendant or memorial stone, so there's still something to hold after the rest has been released.
Whittier's older homes often have mature gardens, and many families place a pet memorial there: an engraved stone under a citrus tree, a plaque among roses or a planter by the porch. Stone and sealed ceramic hold up better than resin in the inland sun. Indoors, a wooden urn on a mantel suits the craftsman character of many Whittier homes, and small urns fit any shelf.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Anaheim, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Whittier. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
With roughly 85,815 residents, Whittier is the 92nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Whittier are based about 11 miles away in Anaheim, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Santa Fe Springs (3 miles), Pico Rivera (4 miles) and La Mirada (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Whittier routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
31,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Whittier
How we calculated this
85,815 ÷ 2.5 = 34,326 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 31,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,650
Whittier families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
31,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,650 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How California thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
In California, about 70.5%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.
That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Whittier only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
Humidity in Whittier can still catch you out, even in a mild year. Air-dry clay that feels firm on top may be soft underneath, and sealing it too soon can trap moisture and leave a dull, cloudy finish. Turn the print daily, wait until it's pale and light all through, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer before framing.
Because the weather in Whittier is rarely extreme, many families choose to say goodbye outdoors: on a blanket in the garden, on a porch or under a favorite tree. If that's your plan, bring a board to work on. Grass and blankets are too soft for a clean print, so tape your card or set your clay on a cutting board or a large book, and have a damp cloth ready for the paws afterwards.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Whittier, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Burial, scattering and prints in California
Renters in California often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what California allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Decide who will take the print: you at home, your vet, or the crematory at intake. The earlier in the process, the more control you have.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Keeping the print and the memory close
With many multigenerational families in Whittier, dividing a pet's ashes among relatives is common: a main urn at home, small keepsake urns for grandparents, pendants for teenagers, so everyone has something personal to keep. Día de los Muertos altars in many homes also give a yearly place for a pet's photo and candle. A paw print has to be taken before cremation, so mention it when you first call.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Whittier each year?
Our estimate is around 2,650. It comes from Whittier's population (about 85,815), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 31,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Will I have to travel to Anaheim to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Anaheim (roughly 11 miles from Whittier) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Whittier?
Usually yes. Santa Fe Springs is about 3 miles away, Pico Rivera is about 4 miles away and La Mirada is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Whittier climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
