Getting a paw print in Windsor: the local picture

Windsor's newer neighborhoods often have covenants about front-yard features, but backyards usually offer space for a small memorial: a stone set among the perennials, a bench, a young tree. On acreage, families sometimes choose a boulder turned up from their own fields and add a simple engraved plaque. Indoors, an urn, a pawprint frame or a shadow box can sit in any room.

After the 2008 tornado stripped many of Windsor's older trees, residents rebuilt homes and replanted streets, and plenty of families here value memorials that grow: a tree, a perennial bed, a small garden with a plaque. Others prefer an urn in the house or a pendant carrying a little ash. Take the time you need; a planting can always be added in a later spring.

Farm and country homes around Windsor often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.

With roughly 43,840 residents, Windsor is the 22nd-largest of the 36 Colorado communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Denver, about 51 miles (82 km) away, which is where some providers serving Windsor are based.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Greeley (9 miles, a larger centre), Loveland (10 miles) and Fort Collins (12 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

16,000

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Windsor

How we calculated this

43,840 ÷ 2.5 = 17,536 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 16,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

1,350

Estimated dog and cat losses in Windsor each year

How we calculated this

16,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,350 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Colorado

In Colorado, about 77.4%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

The Colorado percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Windsor, not as a count of pets.

Weather in Windsor and your pet's print

Indoor heating in January, February, March, November and December makes the air in Windsor homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.

With 5 months of freezing average lows, Windsor winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Windsor

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Windsor, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Rules in Colorado that touch on keepsakes

Some towns and councils in Colorado run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

The official Colorado local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Windsor.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Colorado level first; our Colorado rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Windsor or your HOA adds anything.

Your paw print plan for Windsor

  1. Take a breath. If your pet has just died at home, there is usually time for a print in the first few hours. Lay them on a towel in a cool room.
  2. Gather what you need: clay warmed in your hands, or card taped to a board with a pet-safe ink pad, plus a damp cloth.
  3. If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Press it gently onto the pads rather than forcing the paw down.
  4. Take a nose print too should you want one; barely touch the nose with the ink pad or an inkless wipe.
  5. Call your vet or crematory once you're done, and mention that you've already taken a print so they don't need to.
  6. Let the print dry indoors, away from heaters and sunny windows, before you frame or post it anywhere.

Remembering your pet through their print

Spring hail, strong summer sun and hard winters all take a toll on outdoor memorials in Windsor. Heavy stone and bronze last; glass, thin ceramic and resin tend to crack within a few seasons. For a memorial tree, a hardy northern Colorado species such as a hackberry or bur oak, planted after the last spring frost and watered deeply during dry spells, stands the best chance of thriving for decades.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Windsor actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Denver, about 51 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Windsor and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

How do Colorado attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Colorado human cremation rate at about 77.4%[5]. We show it on the Windsor page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

How many pet owners live in Windsor?

By our estimate, about 16,000 households in Windsor have at least one dog or cat, and around 1,350 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 43,840, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Windsor?

January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 88°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.

How do I get a nose print from my cat?

Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
