Paw Print Keepsakes in Colorado: what to know
Not every goodbye in Colorado is planned. Accidents, sudden illness and quiet deaths overnight happen, and many owners assume the chance for a print has passed. Usually it hasn't. As long as your pet hasn't yet been cremated or buried, a vet, a crematory or you yourself can still take a print, even a day or two later. Say so on the first phone call.
Prices for paw prints in Colorado are modest compared with the rest of aftercare. The print is usually one of the cheapest items on the list; what you turn it into, such as a silver charm or an engraved urn, is where costs rise. Ask every provider whether a print is already included before you pay for it separately.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
When roughly 77.4%[1] of human funerals in Colorado end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.
We take the Colorado percentage from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[2]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[3]. When you compare quotes in Colorado, check which approach each provider takes.
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[4], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[5]. Prices in Colorado vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.
| Keepsake | Published price | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Clay paw impression (crematory add-on) | $10[4] | Arizona aquamation provider; nose print also $10 |
| Ink paw prints | $49[3] | Northeast crematory network |
| Clay or silver-clay paw print | $76 ($111 framed)[3] | Same network |
| Engraved paw print added to an urn | $20–$35[6] | Typical engraving add-on |
| Paw or nose print pendant | from $99.95[7] | Online memorial retailer |
| Sterling silver charm from your pet's print | $143 plus chain[8] | About two weeks to make |
| Median paw-print add-on | about $32[5] | Our estimate across US crematory price lists |

Landlords, parks and permits in Colorado
Rules in Colorado mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Colorado local government directory.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
- If the print is taken after death, let an adult or the vet do it, and show your child the finished keepsake.
- Make a copy for your child's room, and tuck the original away out of harm's way.
- Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.
Turning a print into something lasting
A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

Questions people ask
How many dog and cat households are there in Colorado?
By our estimate, there are about 1,410,000 dog- or cat-owning households across the Colorado communities we cover. Each of those pets has a paw that can be pressed into clay or ink, and far fewer owners take a print in time than would like one.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Colorado say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
When is the best time of year in Colorado to make a garden stone from a paw print?
Spring or autumn suits most places. Concrete and mortar need moderate weather to cure, and Colorado has both extremes: Grand Junction peaks near 95°F in summer, and Vail averages lows of 2°F in winter. Keep the clay or ink original indoors for now, and mix the stone on a dry, mild day once the soil can be dug.
Can children help make a paw print?
Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
How much does a paw print cost in Colorado?
The print itself is usually a small add-on. Across US crematory price lists, paw-print add-ons range from about $10 to $76, with a median of about $32[5], and some providers include one in the cremation package. Turning it into jewelry or engraving costs more: paw and nose print pendants at one large retailer start from $99.95[7].
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Colorado, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
