Paw Print Keepsakes in Delaware: what to know
If you're in Delaware, the two things that most affect a paw print are timing and weather. Timing, because a print must be taken before cremation or burial, and collection can happen quickly. Weather, because heat cracks air-dry clay, humidity keeps it soft and frost can ruin plaster. Plan for both and you'll almost always get a clear print.
Two free tools help owners across Delaware plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
On cremation, Delaware sits in the middle, at about 59.7%[1] of human deaths, and for many families the choice is shaped by faith as much as by cost. If your beliefs lean toward burial, or you're simply unsure how you feel about cremating a pet, a paw print sits comfortably with either path. It involves nothing more than a gentle press into clay or onto card, and it leaves your pet exactly as they were.
We take the Delaware percentage from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[2] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Delaware, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[3]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[4]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[5]. When you compare quotes in Delaware, check which approach each provider takes.
| Keepsake | Published price | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Clay paw impression (crematory add-on) | $10[6] | Arizona aquamation provider; nose print also $10 |
| Ink paw prints | $49[5] | Northeast crematory network |
| Clay or silver-clay paw print | $76 ($111 framed)[5] | Same network |
| Engraved paw print added to an urn | $20–$35[7] | Typical engraving add-on |
| Paw or nose print pendant | from $99.95[8] | Online memorial retailer |
| Sterling silver charm from your pet's print | $143 plus chain[9] | About two weeks to make |
| Median paw-print add-on | about $32[10] | Our estimate across US crematory price lists |
We built the this numbers from Final Gift Pet Memorial Center and A Greener Place Pet Aquamation, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, scattering and prints in Delaware
Renters in Delaware often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Delaware allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Delaware local government directory.
Your paw print plan for Delaware
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: they can roll the clay, pick the card, or write the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
- Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.
Remembering your pet through their print
Some families bring the print out once a year, on the anniversary or on the day their pet came home, and add something new: a photo, a pressed flower, a note from each person. Over time the box or frame becomes a record of how the family carried the memory. If an anniversary hits harder than expected, you're not alone; in RSPCA research on pet loss, 66.9%[12] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was.

Questions people ask
Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Delaware?
Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
What do other owners in Delaware choose for a paw print keepsake?
We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
Can my vet in Delaware take a paw print before cremation?
Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Delaware, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Delaware say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
How many dog and cat households are there in Delaware?
By our estimate, there are about 85,000 dog- or cat-owning households across the Delaware communities we cover. Each of those pets has a paw that can be pressed into clay or ink, and far fewer owners take a print in time than would like one.
