A paw print to keep, in Cocoa

Cocoa, Florida

Arranging a paw print around Cocoa

Salt from the lagoon and the Atlantic beyond reaches every yard in Cocoa, and outdoor memorials need to cope with it. Granite, glazed ceramic and bronze hold up; cheap metals rust and painted resin chalks within a few summers. Set garden stones on a gravel base so they stay level after downpours, and move anything light into the garage when a named storm is on the way.

Some Cocoa families choose memorials that reflect where they live: a keepsake engraved with a rocket trail or a manatee, a framed photo of a launch watched with the pet on the lawn, or a young native tree planted over a biodegradable urn. Sabal palms and wild coffee cope with local heat and salt. Let the soil settle for a season before adding a marker.

If your pet will travel to a crematory near Orlando, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Cocoa. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.

With roughly 19,777 residents, Cocoa is the 124th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 40 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Cocoa run from there.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Rockledge (5 miles), Merritt Island (7 miles) and Cape Canaveral (8 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

7,300

Cocoa: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

19,777 ÷ 2.5 = 7,911 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 7,300. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

610

Cocoa families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

7,300 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 610 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science; we only apply it to this.

A pet at home in Cocoa

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Cremation accounts for about 72.5%[5] of human deaths in Florida, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.

The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

When the weather works against clay and ink

Ink behaves differently in the Cocoa heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.

Hot months in Cocoa are the best time for an outdoor project in the shade, but not for drying a print outdoors. Direct sun on an air-dry clay disc can warp it and crack the thin edges of the toes. Bring it inside, set it on a wire rack so air reaches both sides and give it two or three days before sealing it with a matte acrylic sealer.

What owners in Cocoa typically pay for a print

A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Cocoa vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

The full price table by product is on our Florida page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Burial, scattering and prints in Florida

Rules in Florida mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Cocoa.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Cocoa may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
  2. Ask them to photograph the print and send it to you, so you know it's clear.
  3. Decide whether to bring your pet home instead of arranging cremation locally; the print goes with you either way.
  4. Ask for ink rather than clay when the print has to be mailed. Card travels well in an envelope; wet clay often doesn't.
  5. If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
  6. Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.

Remembering your pet through their print

The Space Coast has plenty of families who came here for aerospace work and may move on with the next contract, so portable memorials are popular. A small urn, a wall frame holding a paw print, or a bracelet with a tiny amount of ashes can be packed in minutes. If relatives in other states want a share, the provider can usually divide the ashes before they are returned.

Questions people ask

How many pet owners live in Cocoa?

By our estimate, about 7,300 households in Cocoa have at least one dog or cat, and around 610 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 19,777, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Where are the providers that serve Cocoa actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 40 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Cocoa and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cocoa?

Usually yes. Rockledge is about 5 miles away, Merritt Island is about 7 miles away and Cape Canaveral is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Cocoa page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Is there free support if making the print brings up a lot of grief?

Yes. Veterinary schools run free pet loss lines: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors[8], and Tufts runs a volunteer helpline on Monday to Thursday evenings, with 24-hour voicemail[9]. Strong feelings while you hold your pet's paw are normal, and some people find the print is the moment it all becomes real. Our guides also cover early grief.

Who else can take a paw print if my vet in Cocoa doesn't?

Several people can. The crematory that serves Cocoa normally makes one when your pet arrives. A mobile or home-visit vet may carry a kit. A groomer who knows your pet can tidy the paw fur and help you take one on a good day. And you can do it yourself with air-dry clay and a pet-safe ink pad from a craft store. What matters is that it happens before cremation or burial.
