Paw Print Keepsakes in Florida: what to know

Many owners in Florida take their pet's print long before the end, on a calm afternoon while their dog or cat is still a healthy senior. It's gentler, it gives a crisper result and it means the keepsake exists no matter how suddenly things change later. If your pet is still with you, that's the approach we'd suggest first.

Two free tools help owners across Florida plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

We cover 235 communities in Florida, from Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Florida: summer highs reach about 94°F in Cape Coral, while winter lows average 41°F in Tallahassee. In 0% of the Florida communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 235 communities in Florida on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) publishes the Florida rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Florida

The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[2] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[3]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[4]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[5].

A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Florida vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

Local rules worth knowing in Florida

Burial rules in many places, including Florida, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Florida local government directory.

Your paw print plan for Florida

  1. Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
  3. Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
  5. Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
  6. Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.

Remembering your pet through their print

A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

Questions people ask

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Florida?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

What do other owners in Florida choose for a paw print keepsake?

We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.

Can my vet in Florida take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

How many communities do you cover in Florida?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 235 communities in Florida, including Jacksonville, Miami and Tampa. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Florida, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
