Edgewood, Florida
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Edgewood
Edgewood homes usually have a modest yard, which leaves room for a small outdoor tribute: a flat stone among the flowers, a potted plant on the porch, or a plaque by the back door. Inside, a little urn on a shelf, a paw print in a frame, or a charm on a chain holding a little of the ashes keeps the pet close.
Many families in Edgewood have lived here for decades and said goodbye to several pets over the years. Some keep a small shelf or corner with each pet's urn, photo and collar, a quiet record of the animals who shared the house. Others prefer to scatter ashes privately or plant a tree. The decision can wait as long as you like.
There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in Edgewood, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.
About 2,845 people live in Edgewood, which makes it the 202nd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Edgewood are based about 4 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Pine Castle (1 miles, a larger centre), Belle Isle (2 miles, a larger centre) and Sky Lake (2 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Edgewood routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
1,050
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Edgewood
How we calculated this
2,845 ÷ 2.5 = 1,138 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 1,050. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
90
dog and cat deaths per year in Edgewood, our estimate
How we calculated this
1,050 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 90 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Cremation is the norm for people in Florida (about 72.5%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Edgewood, not as a count of pets.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
If your pet dies at home during May, June, July, August and September, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.
Hot months in Edgewood are the best time for an outdoor project in the shade, but not for drying a print outdoors. Direct sun on an air-dry clay disc can warp it and crack the thin edges of the toes. Bring it inside, set it on a wire rack so air reaches both sides and give it two or three days before sealing it with a matte acrylic sealer.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Edgewood whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

What the law in Florida does and doesn't cover
Nothing in Florida restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Edgewood.
Start with the Florida rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Edgewood's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A short checklist for a clean print
- For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
- Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.
Ways families in Edgewood keep a print close
The lakes keep the air damp, and together with Orlando's strong sun they break down outdoor memorials quickly. Printed plaques and painted wood fade and peel; lettering cut into granite lasts far longer. Anything placed near the shoreline should sit on gravel, above where the water climbs after a storm. Inside the house, keep urns and photographs on walls that do not catch direct window light.

Questions people ask
Is Edgewood big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 1,050 Edgewood households keep a dog or cat and around 90 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 2,845), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Where are the providers that serve Edgewood actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 4 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Edgewood and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Edgewood?
Usually yes. Pine Castle is about 1 miles away, Belle Isle is about 2 miles away and Sky Lake is about 2 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Edgewood page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
