Fort Myers, Florida
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Fort Myers
After Ian destroyed so many homes and keepsakes, some Fort Myers families now prefer memorials that are easy to carry to safety: a small urn that fits in a go-bag, a pendant, or photographs backed up digitally with a paw print scanned alongside them. Others choose a sturdy stone set above flood level. Ask the maker about materials that tolerate humidity and salt air.
Winter residents from the Midwest, the Northeast and Canada make up a large part of Fort Myers each season, and they often want a memorial for each of their homes. Two small urns, a keepsake for a grown child and a piece of jewelry can all come from one pet's ashes. Say how many portions you need before cremation, and confirm the size of each container.
Before anything else happens to the original, get a good digital copy. A phone photo will do in a pinch, but a flatbed scanner at 600 dpi or more picks up the fine creases that engravers love. Many public libraries and print shops in and around Fort Myers have one you can use for a small fee. Save the file in two places, and you can order copies, stamps or engravings for years without touching the original again.
Fort Myers's population is around 101,581, the 25th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Cape Coral, about 8 miles (13 km) away, which is where some providers serving Fort Myers are based.
Our pages for Cape Coral (8 miles, a larger centre), Punta Gorda (24 miles) and Naples (33 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Fort Myers as well.
Our estimate
37,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Fort Myers
How we calculated this
101,581 ÷ 2.5 = 40,632 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 37,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
3,100
Estimated dog and cat losses in Fort Myers each year
How we calculated this
37,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,100 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How Florida thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
Cremation accounts for about 72.5%[5] of human deaths in Florida, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
For the Florida figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Fort Myers rather than as pet data.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Fort Myers heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in April, May, June, July, August, September and October you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.
If you're planning a home goodbye in April, May, June, July, August, September and October, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Fort Myers
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Fort Myers, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Rules in Florida that touch on keepsakes
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Florida does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Fort Myers.
We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Fort Myers, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
- Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, call the crematory first thing the next morning and ask for one at intake.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.
Keeping the print and the memory close
The Caloosahatchee, the mangrove shoreline and the boardwalk through the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve are places many Fort Myers families find calming. Scattering ashes in a preserve or on the river can require approval from the land manager. A biodegradable urn under a royal poinciana or a native firebush in your own yard grows into a flowering memorial within a couple of seasons.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Fort Myers actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Cape Coral, about 8 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Fort Myers and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Fort Myers page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Fort Myers climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Fort Myers?
Usually yes. Cape Coral is about 8 miles away, Punta Gorda is about 24 miles away and Naples is about 33 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What is a silver-clay paw print, and what does it cost?
Silver clay is a modeling clay made of fine silver particles and a binder. A jeweler presses your pet's paw, or a copy of it, into the clay, dries it and fires it in a kiln, which burns off the binder and leaves solid silver with the pad shapes intact. A Northeast US crematory network prices a clay or silver-clay paw print at $76[9]. Ask whether the piece is a direct impression or a scaled copy, and whether it comes as a pendant or a flat token.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
