A paw print to keep, in Homestead

Homestead, Florida

Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Homestead

The Redland's nurseries and tropical fruit trees make planting a memorial tree an easy choice here: a mango, avocado or lychee grown over a biodegradable urn. If you rent or have limited space, a potted citrus or hibiscus by the door is enough. For something that stays indoors, an engraved wooden box or a small ceramic vessel on a shelf is simple and lasting.

Homestead is the gateway to both Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park, and for some families the right tribute is one tied to that sawgrass and bay country. National parks generally require permission to scatter ashes, so ask the park first. At home, a biodegradable urn buried beneath a fruit tree or a flowering shrub lets a garden carry the memory forward for years.

Small towns rarely have a pet memorial shop, but they nearly always have someone who engraves: a monument company that letters headstones, a trophy and awards shop, or a sign maker with a laser. Many will engrave a paw print from a clean scan onto slate, wood, metal or a garden stone. Take them a photo of your pet's print and ask whether they can reproduce the real pad shapes, not a generic clip-art paw.

With roughly 86,242 residents, Homestead is the 34th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Miami, about 26 miles (42 km) away, which is where some providers serving Homestead are based.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Cutler Bay (10 miles), Palmetto Bay (13 miles) and Pinecrest (16 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

31,500

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Homestead

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Florida

Cremation is the norm for people in Florida (about 72.5%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Clay, ink and the local climate

Summers in Homestead are hot: August averages highs around 93°F. Heat is hard on air-dry clay. In dry heat the surface skins over and cracks before the inside has set, so dry your print slowly indoors, away from sunny windows and air vents, and turn it every few hours. In humid heat the opposite happens: the clay stays soft for days, so be patient and don't try to speed it up in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable.

If your pet dies at home during April, May, June, July, August, September and October, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Homestead

By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Homestead are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

Landlords, parks and permits in Florida

There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Florida does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.

Not sure which office covers Homestead? The Florida local government directory is the official list.

The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Homestead's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes before you leave the room. Most teams will give you time and can bring a print kit to you.
  2. Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number on paper from reception before you leave.
  5. If no print was taken, call the crematory first thing the next morning and ask for one at intake.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Families in Homestead often mark losses together, with relatives gathering from around South Florida. If several people want to keep a share of the ashes, ask about small keepsake urns or pieces of jewelry that hold a pinch each. Confirm how many pieces the ashes will fill and what each will cost, and ask whether remains have to be mailed to the maker or can be dropped off.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Miami to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Miami (roughly 26 miles from Homestead) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How does Homestead's weather affect pet aftercare?

August is the hottest month in Homestead, with average highs around 93°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Homestead?

Usually yes. Cutler Bay is about 10 miles away, Palmetto Bay is about 13 miles away and Pinecrest is about 16 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Homestead page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can I get a print of my bird's feet?

Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.

How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?

Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
