Indian River Shores, Florida
Who takes paw prints in Indian River Shores
Many island residents have children and grandchildren in other states, and a shared memorial can matter enormously to them. Splitting the ashes among a few small vials, lockets or mini urns lets each household hold part of the pet. Mention it to the cremation provider early so they can portion the remains, or order the small containers first so everything arrives together with the main urn.
Salt spray from the Atlantic reaches most of the island, and combined with humidity it is hard on outdoor pieces. Brass and steel corrode, paint peels and printed photos fade. Engraved granite or sealed stone holds up best if you want something outside. Inside, keep urns and portraits away from bright east-facing windows, and consider where a memorial would go if you had to evacuate for a hurricane.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Port St. Lucie, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Indian River Shores. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
Indian River Shores is home to about 4,467 people, the 193rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Indian River Shores are based about 30 miles away in Port St. Lucie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Gifford (3 miles, a larger centre), Winter Beach (3 miles) and Vero Beach (5 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

How many dog- or cat-owning households Indian River Shores has (estimate)
How we calculated this
4,467 ÷ 2.5 = 1,787 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 1,650. A household with several pets counts once.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Florida
Because Florida cremates about 72.5%[5] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Indian River Shores tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons in Indian River Shores and a print that lasts
If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Indian River Shores heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in May, June, July, August and September you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.
Around August, when highs in Indian River Shores run near 91°F, a senior pet may be flat and uncomfortable in the afternoons. That's often a good time for a print, oddly enough: a hot, sleepy dog or cat lies still. Choose a cool room, keep sessions short, offer water and stop if your pet gets restless. You can always try again the next evening.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Indian River Shores
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Indian River Shores, check which approach each provider takes.

What Florida allows after your pet dies
Rules in Florida mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Indian River Shores's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Choose one calm afternoon and do all the pets together, beginning with whichever one is least bothered by handling.
- Label everything before you start: a name on the back of each card, or a letter scratched into the underside of each clay disc.
- Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal and clean every paw straight away, so no one licks ink off anyone else.
- Keep each turn short, no more than a minute or two each, and reward every press with a treat.
- Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
- Store the set together and date each one on the reverse, so that years from now none of them has gone astray.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Oceanfront condos and manicured gated communities are common in Indian River Shores, and associations often have firm rules on anything placed outdoors. That is one reason many residents choose an indoor memorial: a finely made urn, a commissioned portrait, a framed paw print, or cremation jewelry holding a small portion of the ashes. If you do want a garden stone, check the community guidelines before ordering anything engraved.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in Indian River Shores each year?
Our estimate is around 140. It comes from Indian River Shores's population (about 4,467), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 1,650 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Indian River Shores?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Indian River Shores?
Usually yes. Gifford is about 3 miles away, Winter Beach is about 3 miles away and Vero Beach is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Indian River Shores follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Why did my air-dry clay paw print crack?
Usually because it dried too fast. In hot, dry weather, or near a heater or sunny window, the outside shrinks before the inside has set, and the thin edges of the toes crack first. Next time, dry it slowly indoors at room temperature, loosely covered with a cloth for the first day. Small cracks can be filled with a little fresh clay and smoothed with a damp finger.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
