Paw print keepsakes in Lakeland: where to start
Lakeland is named for its lakes, and places like Lake Mirror, Lake Morton with its swans, and Lake Hollingsworth are where many residents spend quiet time outdoors. If you're thinking of scattering ashes near water or in a park, check the rules for that particular place first, since public agencies set their own. Holding back some ashes for a keepsake lets you remember at home as well as by the lake.
Sun, humidity and summer storms are hard on outdoor memorials in Central Florida. An engraved granite or stone marker lasts far better than wood or resin, and should be set firmly to handle heavy rain. Because the ground is often wet and sandy, some families prefer a potted plant grown from a biodegradable urn, which can be moved during storms or if they relocate.
Home goodbyes are increasingly common in Lakeland. If you're booking an in-home vet, ask whether they bring a clay kit and whether they'll take two prints, one for each person in the family. Taking your own print the day before, when your pet is calm and comfortable on their own bed, is another option and often gives a cleaner result.
With roughly 125,520 residents, Lakeland is the 18th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Tampa, roughly 32 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lakeland run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Plant City (10 miles), Auburndale (10 miles) and Bartow (13 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Lakeland too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
46,000
Lakeland: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
125,520 ÷ 2.5 = 50,208 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 46,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
3,850
dog and cat deaths per year in Lakeland, our estimate
How we calculated this
46,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,850 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
With about 72.5%[5] of people in Florida cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Lakeland, not as a count of pets.
Clay, ink and the local climate
If your pet dies at home during April, May, June, July, August, September and October, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.
Ink behaves differently in the Lakeland heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.

What owners in Lakeland typically pay for a print
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Lakeland whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

Landlords, parks and permits in Florida
Burial rules in many places, including Florida, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
Not sure which office covers Lakeland? The Florida local government directory is the official list.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Lakeland's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your paw print plan for Lakeland
- Decide who will take the print: you at home, your vet, or the crematory at intake. The earlier in the process, the more control you have.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
- Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Many Lakeland residents split time between Florida and another state or expect to move closer to family one day, so portable memorials make sense. A keepsake urn, a paw print impression, a photo frame with a small ash compartment or a piece of jewelry holding a little ash all travel easily. Ashes can be divided so relatives in different places each keep a share.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Lakeland?
By our estimate, about 46,000 households in Lakeland have at least one dog or cat, and around 3,850 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 125,520, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lakeland?
Usually yes. Plant City is about 10 miles away, Auburndale is about 10 miles away and Bartow is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Lakeland actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Tampa, about 32 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Lakeland and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Lakeland climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is there free support if making the print brings up a lot of grief?
Yes. Veterinary schools run free pet loss lines: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors[9], and Tufts runs a volunteer helpline on Monday to Thursday evenings, with 24-hour voicemail[10]. Strong feelings while you hold your pet's paw are normal, and some people find the print is the moment it all becomes real. Our guides also cover early grief.
How many households in Lakeland have a dog or cat?
By our estimate, about 46,000 households in Lakeland have a dog or a cat, and around 3,850 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page.
