Paw and nose prints in Orchid: a calm guide

Orchid, Florida

How owners in Orchid get a paw print

Many Orchid residents want a tribute that suits a thoughtfully furnished home, and Vero Beach galleries and online makers offer fine urns, engraved stone, custom jewelry and framed portraits. Nothing has to be chosen in a hurry; the ashes will keep in the provider's temporary box for weeks or months. A pressed paw impression or a saved lock of fur is the exception, which needs doing before collection.

In Orchid, a planted memorial might be a sea grape or a silver buttonwood in a private garden, set above a biodegradable urn, if your community's landscaping rules allow it. Otherwise, a keepsake indoors, or a portion of ashes released at sea from a boat, can provide a meaningful and discreet tribute. Some residents also plant a tree at a family home elsewhere, so the memorial outlasts a seasonal residence.

Outdoor and barn cats are common around Orchid, and they don't always die where you'd expect. If you find your cat in a shed, under a hedge or in a hay loft, bring them inside to a cool, quiet spot and lay them on a towel before you do anything else. A print is often still possible, even some hours later. Clean the pads gently with a damp cloth first, because dust and straw show up in clay and ink.

With roughly 554 residents, Orchid is the 229th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Port St. Lucie, about 35 miles (56 km) away, which is where some providers serving Orchid are based.

For a second opinion on price, Wabasso (3 miles), Sebastian (4 miles, a larger centre) and Winter Beach (4 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Orchid routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Our estimate

200

Orchid: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

554 ÷ 2.5 = 222 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 200. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

20

Orchid families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

200 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 20 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Cremation is the norm for people in Florida (about 72.5%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Orchid, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Seasons in Orchid and a print that lasts

Around August, when highs in Orchid run near 91°F, a senior pet may be flat and uncomfortable in the afternoons. That's often a good time for a print, oddly enough: a hot, sleepy dog or cat lies still. Choose a cool room, keep sessions short, offer water and stop if your pet gets restless. You can always try again the next evening.

If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Orchid heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in May, June, July, August and September you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing

If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Orchid whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

Landlords, parks and permits in Florida

Rules in Florida say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Orchid may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Getting a paw print in Orchid, step by step

  1. Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
  3. Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
  5. Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
  6. Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.

Ways families in Orchid keep a print close

Salt air on the barrier island can tarnish metals and weather outdoor pieces quickly in Orchid. Choose granite, glass or glazed ceramic for anything kept outside, and place it where it won't catch runoff from sprinklers or storms. Leave nothing on the beach, which is sea turtle nesting ground in the warmer months, and keep silver or bronze keepsakes indoors, where they'll need far less polishing.

Questions people ask

Is Orchid big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 200 Orchid households keep a dog or cat and around 20 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 554), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

Is cremation common in Florida?

For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Orchid follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Does the Orchid climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Orchid?

Usually yes. Wabasso is about 3 miles away, Sebastian is about 4 miles away and Winter Beach is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?

Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.

Can I get a hoof print from my horse?

Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
