Pine Hills, Florida
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Pine Hills
Families with relatives in Jamaica, Haiti or other islands sometimes send part of the remains overseas. Tiny sealed vials, pendants or keepsake urns can hold a small amount each. For a relative flying home with a portion, a thin wooden or plastic box clears airport screening more easily, and the cremation certificate should travel with it. Shipping remains internationally has its own rules, so ask the crematory before posting anything.
Many Pine Hills households are working families who want a memorial that is meaningful without being expensive. A handmade clay paw print, a photo printed on canvas, a planted mango seedling in the yard, or a shoebox of collars and tags can mean as much as anything from a catalog. If you rent, choose something you can take with you when the lease ends.
Dogs in and around a town like Pine Hills often work for a living: herding, hunting, guarding stock or riding in a truck all day. Their pads are thicker and more callused than a house dog's, with nicks and old scars that are part of their story. Those details show beautifully in clay. Use a firmer clay, roll it a little thicker and hold steady pressure for a few seconds so the ridges come through.
With roughly 66,000 residents, Pine Hills is the 50th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 6 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Pine Hills run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Clarcona (2 miles), Orlovista (3 miles) and Lockhart (3 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
24,500
Pine Hills: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
66,000 ÷ 2.5 = 26,400 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 24,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
2,000
Estimated dog and cat losses in Pine Hills each year
How we calculated this
24,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,000 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Florida
Because Florida cremates about 72.5%[5] of the people who die there, many families have no grave to visit, for people or for pets. Something has to take the place of a headstone, and a print does that job surprisingly well. It's physical, it's unmistakably your animal, and it can hang by the front door or sit on a desk. If you plan to scatter the ashes, the print may be the only memorial you keep.

Seasons in Pine Hills and a print that lasts
Around July, when highs in Pine Hills run near 92°F, a senior pet may be flat and uncomfortable in the afternoons. That's often a good time for a print, oddly enough: a hot, sleepy dog or cat lies still. Choose a cool room, keep sessions short, offer water and stop if your pet gets restless. You can always try again the next evening.
Ink behaves differently in the Pine Hills heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.

What owners in Pine Hills typically pay for a print
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Pine Hills, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Rules in Florida that touch on keepsakes
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Florida does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
Not sure which office covers Pine Hills? The Florida local government directory is the official list.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Pine Hills's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
- Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
- Dry clay slowly indoors for two or three days, turning it, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Most makers only need the image, so the original never leaves home.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
In a neighborhood of older ranch homes with carports and front porches, many Pine Hills families keep memorials close to the door: a flat stepping stone with a name pressed into it, a small wind chime hung from the porch beam, or a potted croton by the steps. Indoors, a framed photo beside a small wooden box on the dresser works well. Confirm the maker's price and turnaround before placing an order.

Questions people ask
Does the Pine Hills climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[5] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Pine Hills follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pine Hills?
Usually yes. Clarcona is about 2 miles away, Orlovista is about 3 miles away and Lockhart is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 6 miles from Pine Hills) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Can I get a print if my pet is being cremated near Orlando?
Yes. Many crematories take a print at intake and return it with the ashes. But if the crematory is some distance from Pine Hills, it's easier to take the print locally, either yourself at home or through your vet before collection. That way you can check it's clear and redo it if needed.
