A paw print to keep, in St. Augustine
By our estimate, about 5,950 households in St. Augustine share their home with a dog or cat. Every one of those paws can be pressed into clay or ink, ideally long before goodbye. Here's how.
- Nose prints and fur clippings too

St. Augustine, Florida
Who takes paw prints in St. Augustine
Salt air, humidity and summer storms age outdoor materials fast along this coast. Granite and glazed ceramic weather well, while untreated wood and thin metal do not. Scattering along the Matanzas River or on an Anastasia Island beach calls for a check of the rules first, and a spot well clear of marked sea turtle nests, which are protected each summer.
Visitors come to St. Augustine from all over, and many residents moved here from elsewhere, so families are often spread out. Dividing ashes among a main urn and several small keepsakes lets relatives hold a share wherever they live. Most Floridians now choose cremation, so an urn at home is ordinary here, and nobody will push you to choose a final resting place quickly.
Home burial on your own land is still common in and around St. Augustine, where local rules allow it. If that's your plan, you have more time and privacy than a city owner waiting for a collection van. Take the print at home before you wrap your pet: a calm half hour on the porch or the kitchen floor, with clay warmed in your hands.
About 16,141 people live in St. Augustine, which makes it the 138th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Jacksonville, about 37 miles (59 km) away, which is where some providers serving St. Augustine are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Green Cove Springs (23 miles), Ponte Vedra Beach (24 miles) and Palm Coast (25 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
5,950
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in St. Augustine
How we calculated this
16,141 ÷ 2.5 = 6,456 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 5,950. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
490
Estimated dog and cat losses in St. Augustine each year
How we calculated this
5,950 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 490 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Florida thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
When roughly 72.5%[5] of human funerals in Florida end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.
For the Florida figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in St. Augustine rather than as pet data.
Clay, ink and the local climate
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in St. Augustine, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Paw print costs around St. Augustine, line by line
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in St. Augustine, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

What the law in Florida does and doesn't cover
Some towns and councils in Florida run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. St. Augustine may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
- Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
St. Augustine is a city of memorials, from Spanish colonial walls to centuries-old cemeteries, and many families here want something quiet and lasting. A coquina or limestone marker in a courtyard, a ceramic tile set into a garden wall or a simple urn on a mantel all suit the city's character. In the historic district, check what is permitted before placing anything visible from the street.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from St. Augustine?
Usually yes. Green Cove Springs is about 23 miles away, Ponte Vedra Beach is about 24 miles away and Palm Coast is about 25 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve St. Augustine actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Jacksonville, about 37 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for St. Augustine and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the St. Augustine page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many pet owners live in St. Augustine?
By our estimate, about 5,950 households in St. Augustine have at least one dog or cat, and around 490 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 16,141, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Is there free support if making the print brings up a lot of grief?
Yes. Veterinary schools run free pet loss lines: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors[9], and Tufts runs a volunteer helpline on Monday to Thursday evenings, with 24-hour voicemail[10]. Strong feelings while you hold your pet's paw are normal, and some people find the print is the moment it all becomes real. Our guides also cover early grief.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
