Paw and nose prints in Sunrise: a calm guide

Sunrise, Florida

Paw print keepsakes in Sunrise: where to start

The Everglades begin just west of Sunrise, and many residents treasure the wide sawgrass horizon seen from levee trails and nearby parks. The conservation areas and county parks have their own scattering policies, so check before you go. On a condo balcony, a plant-based urn set in a glazed pot with a native coontie or firebush becomes a small living memorial that thrives in this climate.

Many Sunrise retirees have grown children in New York, New Jersey or further afield, and splitting a pet's ashes lets each household keep a piece of the story: a keepsake urn for one, a pendant for another, a glass heart for a grandchild. Ask the provider to portion the remains before they come back, and check how much each item actually holds before ordering several.

Small-town clinics in Sunrise may close at weekends, so if your pet dies on a Saturday evening, you may be looking after them at home until Monday. A print can still be taken during that time. Keep your pet cool, lay them on a towel, and press the paw gently into warmed clay, or press the clay onto the paw if the leg has stiffened.

About 98,846 people live in Sunrise, which makes it the 28th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Sunrise run from there.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Tamarac (2 miles), Lauderhill (2 miles) and Plantation (3 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

36,500

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Sunrise

How we calculated this

98,846 ÷ 2.5 = 39,538 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 36,500. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

3,050

Sunrise families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

36,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,050 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Sunrise

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Cremation is the norm for people in Florida (about 72.5%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Sunrise, not as a count of pets.

Clay, ink and the local climate

If your pet dies at home during May, June, July, August, September and October, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.

Around August, when highs in Sunrise run near 91°F, a senior pet may be flat and uncomfortable in the afternoons. That's often a good time for a print, oddly enough: a hot, sleepy dog or cat lies still. Choose a cool room, keep sessions short, offer water and stop if your pet gets restless. You can always try again the next evening.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Sunrise are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

We keep the detailed Florida price table on one page so it stays current: see Florida prices.

What Florida allows after your pet dies

Burial rules in many places, including Florida, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Sunrise's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

Getting a paw print in Sunrise, step by step

  1. Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, the first few hours usually leave enough time to make a print. Settle them on a towel somewhere cool.
  2. Gather what you need: clay warmed in your hands, or card taped to a board with a pet-safe ink pad, plus a damp cloth.
  3. If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Ease it onto the pads with light pressure; don't try to push the foot down.
  4. Take a nose print too should you want one; barely touch the nose with the ink pad or an inkless wipe.
  5. Call your vet or crematory once you're done, and mention that you've already taken a print so they don't need to.
  6. Let the print dry indoors, out of direct sun and well clear of radiators, before framing it or mailing it.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Condo living in Sunrise leaves limited room for display, so compact memorials tend to suit: a slim urn among the books, an ink paw print framed with a snapshot, or a small keepsake box holding a tag and a favorite toy. Wall-mounted shadow boxes save shelf space entirely. Before ordering, find out the exact measurements and whether engraving and delivery are part of the price.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Sunrise actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Hialeah, about 22 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Sunrise and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Does the Sunrise climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[5]. We show it on the Sunrise page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sunrise?

Usually yes. Tamarac is about 2 miles away, Lauderhill is about 2 miles away and Plantation is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?

Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.

My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?

You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
