A paw print to keep, in Venice
About 930 households in Venice lose a dog or cat each year, by our estimate. A clear paw print, taken at home or by your vet, is often the keepsake people are most glad to have.

Paw print keepsakes in Venice: where to start
Water often shapes how Venice families remember a pet. A biodegradable urn released offshore, beyond the distance federal rules require, can be paired with a scattering at sunset from a small boat. Some people keep a tiny portion in a pendant or glass orb afterward. If you're dividing ashes among relatives up North, ask for the total amount before you promise shares.
Many Venice households are retirees who relocated from the North, and memorials often need to travel: a compact urn, a keepsake box or jewelry that can move with them or pass to grown children. If you're uncertain, bring the remains home in whatever simple box the provider uses and choose later. No deadline applies to the final memorial, and snowbirds often find the right piece only after spending a season back up North.
In a smaller place like Venice, the local vet usually arranges aftercare and sends pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as St. Petersburg. That makes the vet the natural moment for a print, because once your pet leaves town it's much harder to ask. Tell the clinic you'd like a clay or ink print before collection, and check it's clear before you leave.
With roughly 30,477 residents, Venice is the 93rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Venice are based about 47 miles away in St. Petersburg, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are North Port (14 miles, a larger centre), Sarasota (17 miles) and Punta Gorda (26 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Venice too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
11,000
Venice: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
30,477 ÷ 2.5 = 12,191 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
930
dog and cat deaths per year in Venice, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. Treat it as a minimum.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Cremation habits in Florida and the print window
Because roughly 72.5%[5] of people in Florida are cremated, ashes jewelry and keepsake urns are familiar here. A paw print pairs naturally with them: an urn engraved with your pet's actual paw, or a pendant with the print on the front and a pinch of ashes inside. If that appeals, ask for a clear flat print that a maker can work from.

Weather in Venice and your pet's print
If you're planning a home goodbye in April, May, June, July, August, September and October, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.
Ink behaves differently in the Venice heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Venice whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

Burial, scattering and prints in Florida
You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Florida are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.
To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Venice's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Gulf salt air and August heat break down some materials fast. For an outdoor memorial in a Venice garden, choose stone or cast bronze, set flat among plantings where a mower won't catch it. Photo prints, wood and resin are happier indoors. A screened lanai counts as outdoors for this purpose: humidity there still does damage over a few summers, and storm shutters don't keep the damp out.

Questions people ask
Why does the Venice page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[5] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Venice actually based?
Some are local, and some run from St. Petersburg, about 47 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Venice and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Venice climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is Venice big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 11,000 Venice households keep a dog or cat and around 930 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 30,477), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?
Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
