Paw Print Keepsakes in Hawaii: what to know

If you're in Hawaii and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

Two free tools help owners across Hawaii plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

We cover 4 communities in Hawaii, from Honolulu, Hilo and Kailua to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Hawaii: summer highs reach about 90°F in Lahaina, while winter lows average 63°F in Honolulu. In 0% of the Hawaii communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

Estimated pet-owning households across the communities we cover in Hawaii

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 4 communities in Hawaii on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

When roughly 77.3%[1] of human funerals in Hawaii end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[2], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[3]. Prices in Hawaii vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[4]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[5]. In Hawaii, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Rules in Hawaii that touch on keepsakes

Burial rules in many places, including Hawaii, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Hawaii local government directory.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Skip the table. Bring the clay or card to wherever your pet likes to lie, on the floor or on their own bed.
  2. Recruit a second person whose only job is calming your pet, stroking and talking, while you handle the paw.
  3. Use a lick mat or a few treats to keep your pet's attention forward and their head still.
  4. Don't straighten a stiff leg. Slide a board under the paw and bring the clay up to meet it.
  5. Stop after a few tries when it's upsetting your pet. There's always tomorrow, or your vet can lend a hand at the next appointment.
  6. Try an inkless kit if your pet hates damp paws; there's nothing to wash off afterwards.

Ways families in Hawaii keep a print close

If you plan to scatter some ashes, keep a pinch back before you do. A pendant with your pet's print on the front and a little ash inside is one of the most popular pairings, and our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how little each piece holds.

Questions people ask

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Hawaii, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

Can my vet in Hawaii take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

Is it better to use a local maker in Hawaii or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.

How many communities do you cover in Hawaii?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 4 communities in Hawaii, including Honolulu, Hilo and Kailua. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

When is the best time of year in Hawaii to make a garden stone from a paw print?

Spring or autumn suits most places. Concrete and mortar need moderate weather to cure, and Hawaii has both extremes: Lahaina peaks near 90°F in summer, and Honolulu averages lows of 63°F in winter. Keep the clay or ink original indoors for now, and mix the stone on a dry, mild day once the soil can be dug.
