Godfrey, Illinois
How owners in Godfrey get a paw print
Wooded lots and bluff-top gardens in Godfrey invite quieter memorials: a limestone ledge rock with a name chiseled in, a redbud set out where the pet liked to nap, or a shaded bench for sitting. Indoors, a walnut urn, or a snapshot framed next to an inked paw, fits any room. Ashes are returned in a sealed container, so there's no rush to make a permanent choice.
Madison County weather is hard on outdoor memorials in two ways: long, humid summers encourage moss and mildew on porous stone, and winter freeze-thaw cracks concrete and resin. Polished granite and bronze shrug off both. Godfrey's sloping lots add one more step: level a small bed of compacted gravel first, so the marker doesn't slide or tilt as the ground shifts.
Small towns rarely have a pet memorial shop, but they nearly always have someone who engraves: a monument company that letters headstones, a trophy and awards shop, or a sign maker with a laser. Many will engrave a paw print from a clean scan onto slate, wood, metal or a garden stone. Take them a photo of your pet's print and ask whether they can reproduce the real pad shapes, not a generic clip-art paw.
With roughly 17,620 residents, Godfrey is the 146th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. St. Louis, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Godfrey run from there.
Families in Godfrey often end up using a provider from Alton (5 miles), Florissant (12 miles, a larger centre) and Hazelwood (14 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
6,500
How many dog- or cat-owning households Godfrey has (estimate)
How we calculated this
17,620 ÷ 2.5 = 7,048 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 6,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
540
Godfrey families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
6,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 540 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Illinois
About 60.2%[5] of people in Illinois are cremated, so cremation and burial are both common. Pet owners are split the same way: some bury at home or in a pet cemetery, others choose cremation. Either way, a print should be taken first. With a burial you usually have more time and can do it yourself; with cremation, ask the vet or crematory when you book.
We take the Illinois rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Godfrey, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Clay, ink and the local climate
If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Godfrey winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.
Plaster and cold don't mix well. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it cures, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. In January, February, March and December, mix plaster with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm indoors and never leave a curing cast in a car, porch or shed overnight. The same goes for air-dry clay.

Paw print costs around Godfrey, line by line
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Godfrey vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

Rules in Illinois that touch on keepsakes
You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Illinois are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.
Illinois keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Godfrey.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Illinois level first; our Illinois rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Godfrey or your HOA adds anything.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.
Remembering your pet through their print
Families with ties up and down the river sometimes split a pet's ashes so several households can keep a share, whether a locket for a daughter in St. Louis, a small box for a grandparent in Alton, or a portion planted under a young dogwood in Godfrey. Mention straight away if you'd like the paws inked or fur kept, since both need the body.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Godfrey?
By our estimate, about 6,500 households in Godfrey have at least one dog or cat, and around 540 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 17,620, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Will I have to travel to St. Louis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Louis (roughly 22 miles from Godfrey) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[5] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Godfrey follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Godfrey?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 87°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
