Hazelwood, Missouri
Arranging a paw print around Hazelwood
Hazelwood's compact ranch houses and apartment units suit smaller memorials: a lidded urn tucked on a dresser, a pendant on a chain, or a shadow box that holds a collar tag beside a favorite snapshot. None of it has to be decided in the first days. The simple container the ashes come home in is sturdy enough to use for months while you think about something more permanent.
For households with family spread across north county, St. Charles and further afield, sharing the ashes can be a comfort. A portion might go into a keepsake urn for a grandparent, a little into a pendant, and the rest into a garden bed. An inked paw print, framed and hung by the front door, is a small daily reminder that costs very little.
Farm and country homes around Hazelwood often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.
Hazelwood is home to about 24,849 people, the 30th-largest of the 43 Missouri communities we cover. St. Louis, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hazelwood run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Florissant (4 miles, a larger centre), Ferguson (6 miles) and St. Charles (6 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Hazelwood too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Cremation habits in Missouri and the print window
In Missouri, about 59.8%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
The Missouri percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Hazelwood, not as a count of pets.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
In the hot months, take prints in a cool, air-conditioned room and dry the paw first so ink doesn't smudge. In January, when lows average about 24°F, warm the clay in your hands and keep plaster work indoors. A pet who has been in cold storage will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead of the other way round.
Planning an outdoor memorial in Hazelwood? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.

Paw print costs around Hazelwood, line by line
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Hazelwood whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Missouri: Missouri costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Missouri allows after your pet dies
Rules in Missouri mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
Missouri keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Hazelwood.
The rules that apply across Missouri (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Missouri page. Hazelwood may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, phone whoever has them, the kennel, the sitter or a nearby vet, and ask for two things first: that your pet is kept cool, and that a paw print is taken.
- Ask them to photograph the print so you can check it's come out clearly; a text is fine.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation where they are; the print can travel with either choice.
- Ask for ink rather than clay if the print will be posted to you. A flat card survives the mail far better than damp clay.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts from everyone you deal with, so the pieces fit together afterwards.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
North county yards tend to be modest, often with a small patio or a strip of garden along the fence. That is room enough for a flat engraved stone or a planter with a bronze tag. Winter freezes can lift pieces set straight on soil, so a thin base of gravel keeps things level. Renters can pick something portable that moves with them when the lease ends.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to St. Louis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Louis (roughly 16 miles from Hazelwood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Hazelwood climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 90°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Hazelwood page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.8%[5] of Missouri residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Hazelwood?
The closest communities we cover are Florissant (about 4 miles), Ferguson (about 6 miles) and St. Charles (about 6 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hazelwood too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why did my air-dry clay paw print crack?
Usually because it dried too fast. In hot, dry weather, or near a heater or sunny window, the outside shrinks before the inside has set, and the thin edges of the toes crack first. Next time, dry it slowly indoors at room temperature, loosely covered with a cloth for the first day. Small cracks can be filled with a little fresh clay and smoothed with a damp finger.
What is a silver-clay paw print, and what does it cost?
Silver clay is a modeling clay made of fine silver particles and a binder. A jeweler presses your pet's paw, or a copy of it, into the clay, dries it and fires it in a kiln, which burns off the binder and leaves solid silver with the pad shapes intact. A Northeast US crematory network prices a clay or silver-clay paw print at $76[9]. Ask whether the piece is a direct impression or a scaled copy, and whether it comes as a pendant or a flat token.
