East Chicago, Indiana
Arranging a paw print around East Chicago
Lake winds, snow and industrial grit are tough on anything left outside in East Chicago. If you do have a patch of yard for a marker, use solid stone or bronze rather than painted resin, set on a gravel base, and give it a wipe now and then. A potted plant on a porch or balcony can serve as a living memorial when there's no ground to use.
With many families spread across Northwest Indiana, Chicago and beyond, portable keepsakes make sharing easy. Small vessels of ashes, a pendant or ring holding a trace of them, or a clay paw mold can go home with each person. Paw impressions and fur snippets have to be arranged ahead of cremation, so ask when you first speak with the provider.
Farm and country homes around East Chicago often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.
With roughly 25,610 residents, East Chicago is the 40th-largest of the 50 Indiana communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve East Chicago are based about 18 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
East Chicago sits within easy reach of Hammond (3 miles, a larger centre), Calumet City (6 miles) and Gary (7 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from East Chicago; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
9,400
How many dog- or cat-owning households East Chicago has (estimate)
How we calculated this
25,610 ÷ 2.5 = 10,244 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,400. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
790
Estimated dog and cat losses in East Chicago each year
How we calculated this
9,400 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 790 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

How Indiana thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
Roughly 56.5%[5] of deaths in Indiana end in cremation, which often means one family holds both preferences. A grandparent may want the dog buried under the apple tree while a younger owner would rather have ashes on the mantel. If that debate is happening in your house, start with the print. Everyone agrees on it, it has to come first anyway, and it buys you a calmer hour to decide the rest.
We take the Indiana rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for East Chicago, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Clay, ink and the local climate
With 4 months of freezing average lows, East Chicago winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.
Winter in East Chicago brings average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March and December. Cold makes modeling clay stiff, so warm it in your hands for a few minutes and roll it smooth before pressing. If your pet has been kept in a cold garage, a clinic cooler or a crematory's cold room, the paw pads will be firm, so press the clay onto the paw rather than the paw into the clay.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in East Chicago, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Rules in Indiana that touch on keepsakes
Rules in Indiana say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

Getting a paw print in East Chicago, step by step
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Ways families in East Chicago keep a print close
In an apartment or a house with little yard, an indoor memorial is often the natural fit: a candle beside a framed photo, a small chest on a dresser, a shelf with the collar and a favorite toy. Many East Chicago homes already hold photos and mementos of loved ones, and a pet can have a place among them. There's no need to hurry the decision.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many pets die in East Chicago each year?
Our estimate is around 790. It comes from East Chicago's population (about 25,610), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 9,400 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in East Chicago?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Where are the providers that serve East Chicago actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 18 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for East Chicago and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with East Chicago?
The closest communities we cover are Hammond (about 3 miles), Calumet City (about 6 miles) and Gary (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve East Chicago too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What is a silver-clay paw print, and what does it cost?
Silver clay is a modeling clay made of fine silver particles and a binder. A jeweler presses your pet's paw, or a copy of it, into the clay, dries it and fires it in a kiln, which burns off the binder and leaves solid silver with the pad shapes intact. A Northeast US crematory network prices a clay or silver-clay paw print at $76[9]. Ask whether the piece is a direct impression or a scaled copy, and whether it comes as a pendant or a flat token.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
