Getting a paw print in Annapolis: the local picture
Many families in Annapolis decide to scatter a small portion of ashes on the water and keep the rest at home in an urn or keepsakes. If that appeals, ask the provider to set aside separate portions and check what rules apply to scattering in the Bay. Anything taken from the body itself, like an ink paw print, has to be arranged ahead of the cremation.
Annapolis's sailing culture shapes how some families remember a companion. A small brass plaque on a boat, an urn shaped like a buoy or anchor, or keepsake jewelry worn on the water are all personal choices. Others prefer a quiet stone in the garden or a framed paw print. There's no deadline for choosing, and ashes can wait safely in their temporary container.
Farm and country homes around Annapolis often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.
Annapolis is home to about 40,634 people, the 11th-largest of the 19 Maryland communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Baltimore, about 22 miles (36 km) away, which is where some providers serving Annapolis are based.
Annapolis sits within easy reach of Bowie (13 miles), Greenbelt (21 miles) and Laurel (21 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Annapolis; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
15,000
Annapolis: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
40,634 ÷ 2.5 = 16,254 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 15,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,250
dog and cat deaths per year in Annapolis, our estimate
How we calculated this
15,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,250 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
About 55.2%[5] of people in Maryland are cremated, so cremation and burial are both common. Pet owners are split the same way: some bury at home or in a pet cemetery, others choose cremation. Either way, a print should be taken first. With a burial you usually have more time and can do it yourself; with cremation, ask the vet or crematory when you book.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Maryland figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Annapolis tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
When the weather works against clay and ink
Clinics and crematories in and around Annapolis often keep pets in cold storage before cremation, especially in January, February and December when collection runs can be delayed by weather. That doesn't prevent a print, but it helps to ask before your pet goes into the cooler. A quick print while the paw is still soft is far easier than one taken later from a cold, stiff paw.
With 3 months of freezing average lows, Annapolis winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Annapolis are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

Local rules worth knowing in Maryland
If you might move away from Maryland one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Maryland allows, set out below.
Maryland keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Annapolis.
Start with the Maryland rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Annapolis's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, and ask whether they'd like to help with the print. Our guide to print-making with children suggests roles for different ages.
- Give them a real job: they can roll the clay, pick the card, or write the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint next to the paw, if they'd like to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
- Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.
Turning a print into something lasting
Salt air and humidity near the Bay are hard on outdoor memorials, corroding cheap metal and encouraging moss on stone. For something that will stay outside in Annapolis, choose granite, marine-grade bronze or stainless steel, and place it where it gets some sun to dry out. Indoors, keep urns away from damp basements, which can be an issue in older waterfront homes.

Questions people ask
Does the Annapolis climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Roughly how many pets die in Annapolis each year?
Our estimate is around 1,250. It comes from Annapolis's population (about 40,634), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 15,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Is cremation common in Maryland?
For people, yes: about 55.2%[5] of Maryland deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Annapolis follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Annapolis?
The closest communities we cover are Bowie (about 13 miles), Greenbelt (about 21 miles) and Laurel (about 21 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Annapolis too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
